When it comes to baking, Wilton is a name that I’ve grown to trust. If you are going to invest a few hours or your time into making tasty treats it only makes sense to use the best products available. When I came across the Wilton Color Mist I was pretty excited to try it out – little did I know that I’d get addicted to using it on almost everything. The real beauty of this product is that it’s taste free so you never have to worry about it changing the flavor of your baked goods. The boys love to grab a can and spray it on food to give it a little color or when they have friends over they use it to completely gross them out. The funniest was when I made pudding cups for everyone and my youngest got the bright idea to fill the cups half way then spray on green Color Mist then add more pudding. I sat back and watched the scene unravel – seven boys sitting at the table in complete silence; they were clueless about the joke until they hit the middle of the pudding cup. My youngest then said “Oh my gosh, I think this is the old pudding!”. I wish I would have had a camera for the looks on their faces, totally priceless. After a few minutes the little prankster filled them in and while they were relieved that they weren’t eating moldy pudding, they did chase him around the house for a while trying to get some revenge.
Wilton Color Mist
If you ever wanted to decorate a cake quickly but have it look like the professionally designed pieces you get from your local bakery, this is the product for you. You can control the amount of color you add to your baked goods, create dazzling effects and spruce up run of the mill items for last minute entertaining. This is so easy to use that even complete kitchen klutzes will come off looking like a pro – regardless of your level of kitchen experience this is one product that is almost goof proof. How can you screw it up? Well, when you first break open the can you will want to test it out on something light – like white paper or a kitchen plate. You’ll be able to make sure that the can works properly and be able to see how much pressure is needed to get the color desired. Don’t let the size of the can [one and a half ounces] fool you either, there’s enough product in each can to do about 75 cupcakes or six to seven large cakes – and you’ll still have some left over. When I used this for a small homeschool bake sale I was able to cover five box mixes of cupcakes in less than fifteen minutes once I had them frosted and I still had a little left over in the can when I was done.
There’s really no limit to what this mist can be used on – cakes, iced cookies, pudding cups, ice cream, cupcakes … you name it, you can mist it. You‘ll get the best results from using this on lighter coloring icings and frostings and it can be layered, sprayed on top of other decorations or let the kids have a blast decorating their own deserts. Since this is an aerosol type product, make sure you supervise younger children if they are going to use this, you never know when someone is going to get a little overzealous and start decorating someone’s face. Getting this on your skin really isn’t a problem providing that you wash it off within a few minutes, if you leave it on for an extended period of time you might be left with some on your skin, not a lot but enough for people to give you funny looks at the market [yes, that is personal experience speaking].
Easy of Use
If you’ve ever used a can of aerosol hair spray you are qualified to use this product. The small can is easy to hold, the sprayer nozzle delivers a solid shot of color and it can be used on almost any type of food item. You don’t need to apply a lot of pressure to get the flow started but you might want to practice on a piece of paper or large paper towel if you are going to try some f the special effects. It doesn’t get any simpler than this – remove the cap, locate the direction of the nozzle, press down and apply to the desired area. I’ve never had a nozzle clog on me – maybe I’ve just been really lucky in the respect. If the nozzle does clog, the manufacturer suggests running it under some warm water to clear out the clog but remember to allow it to dry completely before you get back to decorating or you might end up ruining whatever you are working on.
Colors
Currently there are eight vibrant colors available: red [710-5500], blue [710-5501], yellow [710-5502], green [710-5503], purple [710-5504], pink [710-5505], black [710-5506] and orange [710-5507]. Stores like Michael’s and Jo Anne’s carry a few of the colors but you may need to go online and order a few of the colors. Black, red, pink and blue are the colors that I see most often in stores and I’ve yet to come across orange or green anywhere except online.
Price
This has a suggested retail price of $2.99 but I have seen it for less at Target in their seasonal bakeware section. The colors are a little limited around Halloween [black, orange and purple were all I found] but you should be able to find the others are places like Michaels – but you’ll pay the full retail price there [or more]. You can order these directly from the Wilton Online Store if you are having trouble locating them locally but if this is the only product you are looking for I suggest that you call them and ask them which stores in your area carry Wilton products so you don’t have to pay for shipping and handling.
The Bottom Line
This is a great product to have on hand all year around. I’ve yet to meet a person that would pass up a cupcake that’s frosted with a few sprinkles on top – but hand them one that’s been decorated and hit with the Wilton Color Mist and they’ll probably ask you which bakery you purchased them from. This is easy enough for anyone to use, is a great value for the suggest retail price and allows you to decorate without having to mix colors into icing. This is also the perfect item to use with Wilton Halloween Mini Stencils when decorating cakes, cookies or cupcakes.
