| Freak369's Full Review: Wilton Copper Halloween Cookie Cutter Set Of 6 |
If youve read any of my other Halloween related reviews, you know that we take the spooky season very seriously here. In fact, I just started unpacking some of the Halloween stuff to see what needs to be replaced and what can make it through another year. I have a lot of holiday cookie cutters but Ill admit it, most of them are Halloween themed. I take a lot of pride in my Halloween cookies and [hanging head low] spend a lot of time decorating them. To make sure that I have the best cookies to work with, I try to get the cutters that will give me the best results. The plastic ones are good but dont give you the crisp, clear edges and detail that metal cutters provide. When I first saw this set I almost passed on them because I had smaller ones in metal that were almost identical to the ones in this assortment. The smaller ones were colored [white, orange and black] and produced nice mini cookies but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I needed cutters in this size.
Wilton Halloween Cookie Cutters 2308-3723
In this six pack assortment you get the following cutters: bat, cat, tombstone, pumpkin, ghost and moon. These are small cutters with the average size being about two inches. For the most part the cutters are easy to use but I have the best results when I chill not only the dough, but the cutters as well. Since these are metal they will absorb a little of the heat from your hands which could make the edges of the cookies sensitive not a good thing when you want a nice looking cookie with a lot off detail to it. The bat and pumpkin have the most amount of detail to them and give the best end result with the cat and ghost being the worst. Its hard to get these to keep their shape so you end up with a funky looking blob [the ghost] or something that looks like a misshaped heart [the cat] if you arent really careful in rolling out the dough and using a recipe that wont spread while baking.
The sugar cookie recipe that comes with this assortment is good for sugar cookies. But if you want cookies that will retain the shape, try a basic shortbread recipe instead. You can still ice them and decorate them and while they wont be as tasty as sugar cookies, they will look a lot better. These cutters will go through most dough easily but Id stick with something that can be rolled thin without tearing or crumbling to get the best looking cookies. The bottoms of the cutters arent sharpened but that doesnt mean that they arent sharp. Younger kids can use these but I really suggest parental supervision when they are using them. If you have any concerns about them using metal cutters, stick with the plastic ones until they are a little older. The cookies might not turn out as good as the one cut from metal but at least its safe for them to use. The tops of the cutters have a rounded surface so they are easy to grip but one you are knee deep in dough and flour, you might have a little trouble pulling them back out of the pressed dough. I solved this little quandary by having an old kitchen towel near by that I could use to lift out the cutter this helps preserve the shape of the cookie since you dont have to wiggle it around or lose your grip on the cutter.
Care & Cleaning
These cutters can be tossed in the dishwasher but due to their small size, I suggest placing them inside a dishwasher safe plastic container to keep them from getting bounced around or ending up in the rinse water. I prefer to hand wash them and dry them with a paper towel to avoid spots. I dont suggest using any type of copper cleaner on them unless you are using them for decorative purposes. If you do use a copper cleaner on these, make sure you read the label carefully in regards to using these for baking. I tossed out my empty container of copper cleaner so Im not completely sure about the health risks of using a cleaner on something that will be used for baking or food consumption. These cutters usually last a few seasons before they are too tarnished to be used safely for baking thats what they get recycled and used for crafts.
Things To Know
These can be used for more than just making cookies! If you have several sets or purchase a new set to replace and old one, these are great for using to decorate or when making crafts. One of my favorite things to do is pick these up on sale after Halloween and save them until the next season. Use some dried corn hush pr in a pinch raffia paper and tie these to presents or baked treats when attending Halloween parties. These can be used by kids to make Halloween cards or decorations or just left around the house as small trinkets. Since these are copper they will turn after a few years of use if not properly cared for but that just adds to the overall look nice and creepy. One of the coolest things I did with the old cutters was to attach them to a large vine wreath with other old metal cutters and hang it on the front door. It cost about $6.00 to make, took about an hour and a half to complete and looked awesome. You can also add orange lights behind the wreath to give it a spooky glow.
The Bottom Line
This set usually sells for about $3.50 - $4.50 but you can pick this set up after Halloween for less than a few dollars. This is a great way to stock up on cutters for making cookies or just decorating purposes. I have several friends that collect cookie cutters and I always try to find the bizarre and strange cutters for their collections. As strange as it may sound, these little cutters make great gift ornaments providing that the person receiving the gift is into the Halloween spirit all year round. The sets Ive had have lasted a few seasons but they do turn and start to look rather nasty so thats when they get retired and used as decorations or for crafts.
As always, thanks for the visit!
