| Freak369's Full Review: Wilton Dancing Skeletons Baking Cups |
In this house, Halloween in a big deal. We start making costumes at the end of September, decorate the house in the middle of October and I start baking cookies and treats about a week before the spooky event. Its something that everyone in the family loves and we take it seriously! Wilton has a lot of great Halloween products from candy making kits to baking molds but some of my favorite products are the cup cake and muffin liners. They are an inexpensive way to add a little bit of color and style to your baked goods and so far all of the ones Ive tried have been top-notch products. If you are like me and plan ahead for various holidays, finding these before the beginning of October might be a real chore unless you catch them on a clearance or overstock sale. If you cant find them at your favorite cake decorating store, you can check out the Wilton Online Store to check out the seasonal sections.
Wilton Dancing Skeleton Baking Cups 415-2007
These are standard sized baking cups that will fit into almost every sized cupcake or muffin pan. The fluted edges allow you to adjust the size of you are using a large muffin tin but if you are looking to make smaller treats, these are also available in a smaller tart size [75 count packages] with the same design. The outside part of the cup as a little sheen to it which helps the red color really stand out. If I had to make one complaint it would be that if you are using a batter or mix that contains more than a quarter cup of oil, the area that comes in contact with the batter or mix turns color usually a deep red or off brown. Ive only had this happen with the Duncan Hones brand of cake mix [chocolate and yellow batter] so I am clueless as to the change in color but chalk it up to the oil. Wilton says that these are grease resistant but I have to argue that statement you wont end up with grease on your fingers but the cup itself wont exactly look like a million bucks.
The design on the cup is pretty cool, the white dancing skeletons are on a solid red background. Youll also see small black bats against a yellow moon, tombstones and the word Boo!. As I mentioned, these cups are also available in a smaller size and have the same exact design pattern, except the cups are meant for tarts or mini cupcakes. These are one of the few red baking cups that Ive come across for Halloween and are one of my favorites. These peel away from baked goods nicely and dont require any special handling or care. These are packaged in a plastic bag so storing them might be an issue, youll want to keep them from getting smashed and out of direct sunlight to keep the red color from fading. I keep all the cupcake liners in one box so I can find them when I need them and they arent a mess when I go to use them.
Alternative Uses
You dont have to reserve these just for cup cakes and muffins! I have a lot of beat up muffin tins and pans that I use to serve treats. I spray paint them black or orange and coat them with a spray on sealer. Pop in the cup cake liners, fill them with treats and serve! This means theres almost no clean up necessary and the cupcake and muffin tins get recycled. You can serve candy, small brownies, treats and goodies inside the cups a great way to limit the amount of sugar a kid gets too. I also use these when I make candy covered apples or caramel apples, just press the liner flat, put the apple on top and you are done. These peel off nicely from the candy or caramel and make it easier to move them around and serve them.
If you are the least bit crafty, you can use these to make decorations, for kids crafts or my favorite trick pressing them flat and putting them between two glass dishes. I picked that up from Martha Stewart so I cant take credit for it, but it really makes serving treats or having dinner a spook-tacular event. You can also use these for decorating Halloween piñatas or for decoupage projects. Since they are inexpensive, you can let kids play around with them without having to worry about them wasting them. All thats needed is a little tacky glue, some patience and a lot of wet paper towels.
The Bottom Line
Whether Ive used these for baking or delivering treats, these cups have never let me down. Barring the slight color change when using batters that are heavy in oil, I have no real complaints and highly recommend them to anyone that wants to liven up their Halloween treats. You can usually find these are places like Target, Wal-Mart and Michaels Crafts or you can order them online at the Wilton Store. Normal prices are about $1.00 - $1.50 but I try to get them on clearance a few days after Halloween or when stores have an overstock sale. Another great product from Wilton!
As always
