My kids love cookies but are a little leery about the weird ones that I make from time to time. I initially picked up this cutter to make freaky fish for a party that a few friends were having. A few of them are hard-core fans of the group Phish so I decided to make some tie-dyed fish cookies for the occasion. Pretty simple process just take your cookie dough and divide it up in to five or six balls. Pick out the colors you want to work with and add the dye to the dough. Take small pinches from each of the colored balls and roll it out. The end result is a tie-dyed look that can be topped off with some icing around the edges or left plain. People really went crazy for these cookies and begged me for the recipe and after I explained it to them I realized that half of them werent even capable of tying their own shoes without assistance so there would be no way they could even make the dough, let alone work with food dye. This means any time there is a party of gathering, I get the phone call to make the freaky fish cookies.
Wilton Perimeter Fish Cookie Cutter 2303-128
If you are familiar with the Wilton line of plastic cutters then you can skip over this section. These cutters are sturdy and will work with a majority of dough recipes providing that they arent too thick or too hard. Since this cutter has some fine detail with the fins you will need to dust the cutter with flour before you press it in to the dough. This adds a few minutes to the assembly process but it is worth it in the long run since your cookies will retain their true shape when you are transferring them from the cutting surface to the cooking sheet. The crossbar on the middle of the cutter makes it easier for kids to use this and the rounded lip on the edge of it makes pulling it out of dough a snap.
This cutter is about four inches long and three inches high so they are anything but small and bite sized cookies. Depending on the recipe you use, you can expect them to expand a little when baking so be sure to leave some extra room on the cookie sheet. Youll want to make sure that the cookies come out of the oven flat but if they do come out bubbled give the cookie sheet a good firm whack on the counter top and that will knock the air out of them literally. Since these are a little on the large side you will want to let them cool off completely before you try to transfer them to another surface, this will help reduce breaking and cracking and ensure that you have good looking fishies.
Care & Cleaning
As mundane as it is, cleaning the cutters when you are done is essential to keeping them in great condition. The fins on the top are the only spots where dough seems to get stuck, a toothpick helps to remove large clumps when pressing out the dough but for cleaning you will want to use some type of a brush [finger brush or toothbrush] to get into the area. I never toss my cutter in the dishwasher so sink washing is the only advice I can offer. Warm soapy water, a good ten minute soak and they are clean and ready to be air dried.
For the younger kids you can use this cutter to make red and blue fish just like Dr. Seuss! Add a small amount of food color or dye to the dough but dont go overboard with it or they might turn out darker than you planned. As I already mentioned the Phish tie-dyed ones but thats just the start. You can use these to cut out sandwiches, for making fish cakes [just like crab cakes only with minced fish] that get deep fried or even for kids craft projects. You can turn these in to colorful creations by topping them off with colored sprinkles or a light coating of royal frosting but in all honesty, these look pretty spiffy plain too.
The Bottom Line
Some people might look at this any say that its just a cookie cutter but I look at it as something that has a lot of different uses in the kitchen. This doesnt work well with chocolate chip dough unless the chips are extremely small and can be pushed out of the way with the plastic edges but any soft dough will work great with this. For the price about fifty cents this is a cutter that sees a good bit of use in my kitchen. Id suggest this for anyone that wants a little variety when making cookies, likes to shock or surprise guests with strange shapes or is planning a party with a sea or nautical theme. This is also the perfect size for kids parties since there is more than enough room to write each childs name across the body of the fish.
As always, thanks for the read!
