| Freak369's Full Review: Wilton Halloween Lollipop Sticks |
When it comes to making sweets for Halloween, there are so many different options available. Wilton has been a name that I have grown to trust when it comes to baking supplies, candy making goods and seasonal items so it makes sense that Id stick with their line of accessories. If Im going to invest hours of my time into making treats, I want to make sure that they are going to have the best presentation possible enter the Wilton Halloween Lollipop Sticks! Now, you might be shaking your head wondering if I finally went off my rocker a review of a lollipop stick yes, you read that right. I take candy making seriously, when I break out the double boilers, pounds of chocolate and dye, you know better than to come strolling in the kitchen looking for a snack. When I saw that Wilton finally added some colored plastic sticks to their Halloween candy section I was in heaven no longer did I have to use the plain white ones or the rolled paper Wilton Cookie Treat Sticks - no, finally I had orange and black plastic lollipop sticks that I could use for chocolate or hard tack candy. Yeah, its the little things in life that make me happy!
Wilton Halloween Lollipop Sticks 1912-9313
For about two dollars you get a package of twenty sticks, ten orange and ten black. These are the standard four inch in length sticks that can be used with chocolate or hard tack candy [suckers]. These fit perfectly into the Wilton lollipop molds and snap in to place so they dont wiggle around when the filling is setting up. The biggest advantage of using these over the rolled paper variety is that they are a lot lighter so you can use them on cakes, desserts, brownie spreads or even pressed into a piece of spray painted styrofoam and use it as a centerpiece. These are hollow so there is a limit to the amount of pressure and weight they will be able to handle simply put, you wont be able to make huge suckers with these. If you are making something thats more than two to three inches wide, opt for a longer filled stick or go with the rolled paper ones so your creation wont topple over and bust into twenty pieces.
Ive done some experimenting with these and so far they have passed all the tests with flying colors. Since they are plastic you dont have to worry about them breaking down if you choose to refrigerate your treats something that can happen in a short period of time when you use the paper ones. These could accumulate a little bit of condensation if used with chocolate then refrigerated so make sure you wrap them in plastic bags so they arent exposed to air or moisture. Since these are hollow you wont want to reuse them; you never know what could be inside the sticks and if you are investing a lot of time into your endeavors, you could end up with a ruined batch of chocolate or candy by trying to save a few pennies. One great thing that these are awesome for is to make dipped goods; just shove a stick into a cookie, piece of fruit or brownie bit and dip into a chocolate bath. You dont have to worry about finding space for them to harden, just stab the bottom part into a piece of styrofoam and allow it to set up. Ive used these with both large and small candy molds and the only time I had any trouble was when I tried to use these with a four inch sectional mold. The candy was just too big for the stick to support so it would lean and eventually fall over, not something you want to happen when you spent ten minutes painting the inside of the mold.
The only real safety concern here is in regards to kids. This time of year they are jacked up on some kind of confectionary delight and arent always thinking about what could happen. These are hollow but they could very easily jam though someones lip or cheek if they are running with it in their mouth, Ive seen it happen with the paper sticks on suckers and let me tell you, there is no lasting damage but there is a lot of blood. If you are worried about the bottoms of them poking the wee ones, take a miniature marshmallow and shove it on the end, unfortunately I havent come up with a way to prevent accidents from happening with the top portion once the candy has been devoured so keep an eye on them and make sure they toss them in the trash when they are done with them.
The Bottom Line
You can pick these up at places like Michaels or Target but you better get a move on; this is a seasonal item and it wont last long. The suggested retail price for these is about two dollars and if you can find them in your area you can order them from the Wilton Online Store for $1.99 per pack plus shipping. These are a great way to add an extra little touch to candy making; finish them off with a nice decorative bag and a twist tie and you have a very festive, inexpensive and unique treat. Overall Im very pleased with how these have worked out for making chocolate lollipops as well as hard tack suckers. These might cost a little more than the plain white ones but you know, Halloween is only once a year so a few extra pennies for orange and black sticks is well worth it!
Have a spook-tacular & safe Halloween!
