| Freak369's Full Review: Wilton Heart Cookie Cutters, Set Of 7 |
With Valentines Day almost here I figured Id write about one of the coolest metal heart cookie cutter sets that Wilton offers. Normally I stick with plastic cutters because they are easier to clean, are kid friendly and clean up nicely but I couldnt pass up this set when I was placing an order at the site a little over a year ago. I liked the idea of having different shaped hearts on hand when I wanted a little bit of variety but even I was surprised at how much this set got used the rest of the year. If you are someone that loves to make cookies, wants to tuck something special into your sweeties lunch or just likes a little variety then this is the set for you!
Wilton Heart Cookie Cutter Set 2308-1237
This is a great looking assortment of heart shapes that can be used year round if you use your imagination. Because they are metal instead of plastic you can use them on sandwiches for the kids, for cutting out little hearts on a piece of toast or to make your own Jell-O Gigglers. While I really love plastic cookie cutters, most of them arent deep enough to use with Jell-O or to cut out brownies. Ive used these on everything from angel food cake to sheet cookies and they havent failed me yet. About the only thing that you cant use these cutters on are things that contain nuts or chocolate chips [unless the cookies are still warm and you are cutting them off of a sheet cookie]. You really run the risk of denting the sides of the cutter and unless you have a metal workshop in your garage or basement, that usually means they are ruined.
All seven cutters have a heart theme to them but my personal favorite is the ridged one. This is great to use when cutting out brownies because you can really see the detail on the edges. The double heart is a great one to use for weddings, bridal showers or anniversary parties and no matter what type of dough you use, the cookie cut with this one always look great. The smallest heart is great to use on toast or to cut out bread for a sandwich but ladies, hold off on doing this if your sweetie works with manly men or he might just get teased to death. About the only cutter that I dont like is the one with the arrow through it. It took me a long time to try and figure out what it was and them about the same amount of time to try to decorate it. Needless to say, that one rarely gets used.
Since these are metal you will want to make sure that they are 100% clean and dry before you store then and always check the edges for dents and the seams for cracks. I never put these in the dishwasher because I am too paranoid about them not getting completely clean or the water jets pushing them out of the basket. Ive had this set for over a year now and it looks almost as good as when it was new. I really suggest hand washing them in warm water then allowing them to air dry so you can give them the once over to make sure they are free of any cookie dough or other ingredients.
Tips, Decorating & More
Theres really no limit to what you can do with these in the way of decorating them. If you are going for something very basic and simple, try adding some red tint to the dough after you have mixed it and then once you have cut out the shapes, add some colored sugar to it. You will end up with cookies that look great and at a fraction of what you would pay for them at the grocery store. Another easy way to decorate them is with royal icing. If you have never worked with this before it is extremely easy to mix up a batch of icing, pour it into a squeeze bottle and apply to the cookies.
If you are doing a lot of work with the cutters you may want to pop them in the freezer for a few minutes so that the heat from your hands doesnt soften the dough. I only do this when I am making stained glass cookies so I know that the edges are all perfect. So what are stained glass cookies? Glad you asked! Take any type of hard candy, toss it into a bag, smash it up and spoon it into a cookie, the largest and smallest heart in this set are great cutters to use for this type of cookie. Roll out the dough, use the larger cutter to cut out a shape then transfer that to a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper [this is a necessity so you can remove them without cracking the cookie]. Then take the smallest cutter and cut out the shape inside it. Spoon in the candy and bake as usual. It takes about six minutes for the candy to melt and once it cools it looks just like stained glass!
Things To Know
• These come in a cute little box so you can pick up a set for your sweetheart if he or she is into baking and it makes for a nice small give to add to that special Valentines Day present. There is a recipe included with the cutters but in all honesty, its on the plain side and while it yields nice looking cookies, they arent all that tasty. For around five dollars you get seven cool cutters that are sure to make that someone special smile!
The Bottom Line
If you are hunting for a small gift, like having a variety of heart shapes to work with or are just looking to add some zing to your cookies this is a great set to pick up. The shapes are nice, they are easy to work with and you can use them for more than just cookies. About the only downside to this set is they arent all that safe for kids to work with. There arent any sharp edges on the bottom of them but you know how kids can get when they are helping out in the kitchen. If kids want to help out invest in a plastic set for them and keep the metal ones for yourself. You can also use these for decorating; I picked up a few sets last year at Michaels when they had their Valentines Day stuff on clearance and used them on wreathes, gift boxes and wine bags.
As always, thanks for the read!
