| Freak369's Full Review: Wilton Just Batty Lollipop Mold |
With Halloween fast approaching, my house is buzzing with kids who are on an almost permanent sugar high. Between making candy, trying out new recipes and their taste testing Im wondering how long before I have to scrape them off the ceiling. When Wilton introduced the Just Batty line I knew that I had to get it I mean, its Wilton and its Halloween. The Just Batty Lollipop Mold is something that anyone can use regardless of how much candy making experience they have and it is also a great mold for kids to work with. Almost all of the Wilton candy and lollipop molds are strong and sturdy and will put up with a ton of use and abuse before they crack or need to be replaced. This one is no different; Ive been using this for about a month now, trying out different color schemes and seeing how far I can take the design process. So far this mold has held up just as nicely as the rest of my Wilton molds and I look forward to testing its limits this season.
Wilton Just Batty Lollipop Mold 2115-1411
This clear plastic candy and lollipop mold contains eight sections with three very fun designs [six bats, two eeks] that are almost guaranteed to be the hit of any school function, party or gat together. My personal favorite is the flying bat with the quarter moon in the background but the other two are just as equally attractive. The word eek is a great way to add a little scare to cakes, dessert trays or just to hand out to those who come knocking at your door. This one is the easiest of the three to make and requires the least amount of work. You can go with one color or two or for those looking to really add some scare try a white chocolate for the actual word then take some red melted chocolate and swirl it in. You can even make them one solid color then brush on another color once the initial chocolate has set up and hardened. There are a ton of different ways of decorating these and some times its best to play around with them to see which one works best for you.
The two bats in this mold are very festive looking creatures; one has two small fangs showing and the other a simple grin. The eyes of both can be easily achieved by using a squeeze bottle to fill in the space then when its dried and removed from the mold, use a toothpick to create the small dots. The wings are probably the trickiest parts to accomplish and so far I am at about a 75% success rate. Fill the cavity too much and you end up with sloppy wings and no definition, under fill them and they break off as soon as you remove them from the mold. Its all about getting the feel of the mold, how much to add in and how far you press the lollipop stick into it. Trial and error are the best ways of mastering this mold and trust me on this, even the ones that fall apart or come out looking horrible dont last long!
How you go about making these is something that every person is going to have to feel out for themselves theres no right or wrong way to go about making them. Wilton does provide some helpful hints on the product card thats attached to the mold but, as I said, most of what you will get from this mold will be achieved by trial and error. One of the hardest parts of completing this task is to properly insert the sticks for the lollipops; you can use any type that suits your fancy but I suggest using the plastic variety since these are lighter in weight than the Wilton Cookie Treat Sticks. Either of them will work but if you are planning on using the final product to decorate cakes or desserts, you will want something that is lightweight and wont start to break down or dissolve if shoved in a frosting or icing. I suggest letting the chocolate set up for about three minutes then pressing the stick into the mold about three quarters of the way in or one half inch from the top of the cavity. Turn the stick so that it is coated with the chocolate so that when you remove it, it doesnt break off.
Price
You can find these for about two dollars; Michaels recently picked up some of the more popular Wilton Halloween items and I did spot a few of the Just Batty products when I was there. If you cant find these at a local store you can order them online at the Wilton Online Store for $1.99 plus shipping. For me this mold is something that I had to have so even if it cost more than two dollars, I would have still purchased it. It will last at least two or three seasons if given a little tender loving care so its a great investment for not just this Halloween but a few more to come.
Clean Up
Since theres only a moderate amount of detail to the cavities of this mold, cleaning it up shouldnt be a major order, even if you use a strong tint or dye with white chocolate. You do not need to coat the mold [never use oil or water with chocolate] and once the chocolate has set up, flipping the mold over and giving it a tap or two is all thats needed to release the pieces. I soak mine in warm water for about ten minutes then use a toothbrush to get into the individual sections to make sure theres nothing hiding. Check the front section of the mold from time to time to see if there are any dents or damage and if you do spot some troubles, try pressing them out with a toothpick or tine of a fork. If worse comes to worse you can cut out the damaged one and use the others as usual. In the past Ive recycled these to use for making soaps as well as plaster castings. Yes, I do get my moneys worth out of them.
The Bottom Line
So far Ive had some great results with this mold and look forward to making a ton of bat lollipops with them. This is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to decorate cakes too; just grab a handful of them and press them into the corners of cakes for a quick decoration thats a sweet treat too! With a handful of melted chocolate you can make a ton of these bats and eeks and this is a great product for kids to get involved with providing that you let the chocolate cool off a little or pour it into a squeeze bottle for them to work with. You can package them in clear plastic bags with a nice gold twist tie or just hand them out to the troops as an afternoon treat. No matter how you make these or how you present them, they are a nice addition to any Halloween event.
Have a spook-tacular & safe Halloween!
