Pros: Easy to work with. Nice design.
Cons: None really...
As my daughter quickly approaches yet another birthday (Much too quickly I might add!) it is time for me to once again begin thinking about her birthday cake. Since her very first birthday I have enjoyed baking and decorating her birthday cakes. Now, one might think that I must be extremely creative and use all different types of decorating tips when decorating her cake. Dont I wish! I have always said that I am going to take one of those Wilton decorating classes but have yet to do so. So what do I rely on then? Why my trusty Wilton Open Star 16 Decorating Tip.
For the remainder of this review I will be referring to this as the star 16 tip
~ If you need just one decorating tip, this is the one! ~
From my past experience with cake decorating, the star 16 tip has been the decorating tip for me! I have spent many hours squeezing stars out of a decorating bag unto a cake with incredible results. Every time I have a cake that looks like it could have been made by a professional at the bakery down the street. And I cant tell you how many times I have shocked people when they found out that I had made the cake. Mind you, depending upon the size of the size, I may have spent hours creating a pattern of stars on my cakes. And yes, sometimes my hand does cramp up!
As you can tell by the photo image above, the star 16 tip has the shape of a triangle. The tip itself is only about 1 ? inch in height. The smaller end of this tip (With the jagged edges.) is where the frosting would come out. While I use it primarily to make the shape of stars it can also be used to make a nice edging on the bottom of a cake. For a better example of what I am referring to, take a look at the following link:
http://www.wilton.com/wiltonos/ Make sure to look at tip number 16, item# 402-16.
The opposite end of this tip (Which is the wider end.) is where you would attach the tip to the decorating bag (standard size) with a coupler. When your star 16 tip is attached to the coupler and decorating bag, you are ready to fill your bag with frosting. Make sure that you don't completely fill your bag with frosting as you will make one big mess. Trust me! I usually fill my bags mid to 3/4 full. I then twist the end of the bag a few times and begin squeezing. If you have never used the star 16 tip before you may want to try a few practice squeezes on a paper towel prior to decorating your cake to get the hang of it. Really, that is all there is to it!
Because of the size of this star 16 tip, I have always hand washed in warm soapy water. I have always been afraid to stick my star 16 tips in the dishwasher for fear of it escaping and clogging up my dishwasher someplace.
I should note here that the star 16 tips could also be used when decorating other items such as cookies, brownies, cupcakes, etc. Most of my experience with this star 16 tip has been when decorating cakes.
And yet another side note, try the Wilton Butter Cream Frosting recipe. This frosting is of a good consistency and is easy to work with. I have always found this recipe to be included inside of one of my cake pans. If you cant find it, please feel free to contact me. I would be happy to give it to you.
~ Should you have more than one? ~
Just a suggestion, purchase more than one of these star 16 tips when decorating your cake. Considering that each tip can be purchased for under a dollar, there really is no excuse not to have more than one of these around when decorating your cake. Over the years I have found that when I use several different colors of frosting on my cakes, I have each color inside its very own decorating bag, coupler and star 16 tip. I found out the hard way that this method saves a great deal of time.
I have also found after several uses a few of my star 16 tips have just not functioned as well and have needed to be thrown out. You dont want to be caught tipless while in the midst of decorating your cake. Whenever I purchase a new cake pan, or know that I will be reusing a pan that I already own, I always purchase a few star 16 tips as back ups.
~ A Wilton must have product! ~
If you are thinking of baking and decorating your own cake, I would suggest that you try using the Wilton Open Star 16 Decorating Tip. It will leave a nice star pattern on your cake or a decorative edging if you prefer.
These Wilton Open Star 16 Decorating Tips are easy to find at most stores where Wilton products are sold. While this star 16 tip is sold in Wilton decorating kits, they are also sold separately for under a dollar. Remember, for that price, you will want to purchase more than one!
