| Freak369's Full Review: Wilton Ready-to-Decorate Icing Black 710-4404 |
When it comes to baking treats for the holidays, I am always up for adding new products to my small but well stocked kitchen. When I came across the Wilton cans of Ready-To-Decorate Icing I figured that Id give it a try and see if it was just as great as their other products. After using this for a good bit of time I can say that it makes quick work of decorating things at the last minute but isnt exactly cost effective for larger products. The cans are easy to use once you get a feel of how much pressure to place on the tip, require no refrigeration and come in an assortment of colors. This isnt a product that Ill go out of my way to hunt down but if I do come across it on sale you can bet that I would be tossing them in my basket left and right. You never know when youll need them!
Wilton Ready-To-Decorate Icing 710-4404 black
The small and easy to handle 6.4 ounce can of ready to use icing makes it easy to top off small cakes, treats, brownie pies or cupcakes. While Ive only used a few of the colors that Wilton carries, they do have about ten available. I picked up the black can to decorate Halloween cookies instead of having to try and mix black icing, something that I never had much luck doing. It would either add too much and end up with everyone walking around with mouth rot [a term one of my sons coined when he ate an iced cookie, smiled and saw his mouth was jet black] or add too little and end up with gray icing. Give me any other color and I can do an adequate job, but Im cursed when it comes to black.
If youve ever used a can of whipped cream or cheese spread, youll be able to pick this up, attach a tip and decorate. It works the same way, apply pressure to the nozzle and move the tip around the surface of the cake or baked good until you create a design. This works best when used at room temperature and no refrigeration is needed after it is opened. If you are working in a warm area or while still baking, you might notice that the icing will be a little soft and might not hold its shape very well. If you cant move to a cooler part of the house you can refrigerate the item to get the icing to harden up and prevent it from turning into a pile of colored ooze.
Normally I can decorate about six to seven dozen medium shaped cookies with one can. I use this for decorating bat cookies, adding a border to pumpkin cakes and other Halloween treats. The icing doesnt get completely hard like a royal icing so you will need to keep the cookies flat. Its hard to pin the exact consistency of the icing once its been sitting out for a while but its half way between a sugar icing and a royal icing. If you are looking for an icing that will completely harden, stick with the royal version. This is best suited for cakes and cupcakes but I have used these cans on brownies and to make designs on pumpkin cakes and tarts.
Price
The 6.4 ounce cans are priced anywhere from $3.00 to $4.00 each. Ive never seen them packaged in a multi pack of assorted colors but that doesnt mean that Wilton doesnt offer it. If you have ever made your own icing you know that it is pretty inexpensive to make, but takes a little bit of time and patience. You are simply paying for convenience with this product, thats the long and short of it. For large projects this wont be the most cost effective way to go about decorating but it is a good option for those that are looking for a quick way to spruce up store bought cupcakes, to personalize a cake or small touch ups.
Tips
With this product you receive four small tips that can be attached to the top of the nozzle. These will allow you to create different effects and designs without having to use bags or mix icing. The tips are tucked inside the lid and if memory serves me correctly, they are attached to the lid with small snap off prongs. Once you remove the tips they will get lost easily so I slip them into a small bag after they have been cleaned and tape it to the side of the can. The tips are plastic and basic but will give you a little freedom when using the icing. You get four tips, a basic large and small round tip, leaf tip and star tip. There are a lot of different shapes and styles you can create from these but your best bet is to play around with them on your own so you can get a real feel for them.
Things To Know
As I said, this requires no refrigeration after you open it but you should use a little care when storing it. Avoid places that are too warm or too cool to keep the ingredients from breaking down. I usually only keep these for one season and pitch them. Id rather purchase new cans than to have to guess which ones are going to taste right and come out of the can nicely. Youd be wise to wipe down the outside of the container when you are done decorating because there will be a good chance you will get icing or other food stuffs on the can. Since we have nasty outbreaks of ants when the weather changes I have to keep the kitchen in and almost sterile state. I accidentally put this back in the cabinet without wiping it down and freaked out when I opened the door to see a nice little ant trail forming. Luckily I caught it in time and was able to avoid a full blown attack.
The Bottom Line
Overall I am happy with this product but there is room for improvement. There were a few times when the can would spit and sputter out the icing, making a little bit of a mess. Since this doesnt get rock hard it is easy to remove mistakes with a butter knife so I wasnt too irked, it just took a little more time to complete the decorating process. If you arent one to make your own icing or decorations, this is a great way to add a little personal touch to your backed goods or to personalize store bought cakes and desserts. You can find this product at most craft and cake supply stores that stock Wilton products or purchase it online at the official Wilton Online Store.
As always, thanks for the visit
