Pros:Super easy design to complete, great for kids to work with, inexpensive.

Cons:Umm none.

The Bottom Line: Life got ya down? Under stress? Kids driving you insane? Bust out this candy mold and just say “duck it”!

It doesn’t matter whether or not you are in to ducks, if you ever had a little yellow rubber ducky in your tub when you were a child or if you have some deep admiration for Ernie from Sesame Street – you will fall in love with this extremely cute Wilton candy mold the first time you see it. I never thought I’d ever have a use for such a thing but when I came across it at Michaels for $1.00 – that’s half price folks – I couldn’t pass it up. There was a small dent in one of the cavities but I managed to work it out with a few Q-Tip’s and even if I hadn’t managed to work a little magic on the mold, I still had five others I could work with. Since I first picked this up I’ve used it a lot more than I expected – everything from Easter baskets to baby showers, ‘get well’ trays to a make shirt Noah’s Ark. If you look at this and say “I’ll never have a use for it”, keep reading and I am 100% sure that I will change your mind by the end of this review.

Wilton Rubber Ducky Candy Mold 2115-1565

These adorable little ducks will have you quacking up – sorry I couldn’t resist. They are your basic, common variety ducks that are not only easy to make but can be used for a plethora of applications. When I first started making these I labored over the color, trying to get that nice bright yellow – after some very drab looking ducks I finally saved in and picked up a three pound sack of bright yellow chocolate pellets and figured it was easier to but the colored ones and save my sanity than to stand there and play color chemist in the kitchen. The shapes of the ducks are very easy to fill however the end result is one that has a good bit of detail; the only areas that you may want to prefill with another color would be the beak and the eye – this can be done with a toothpick or a thin stiff brush [like one used for stippling] and if you show a child how to do it, it’s a great way to get them involved in the kitchen. Since you get six ducks per mold, you can whack out a ton of these in a short period of time however if you plan on making more than fifty, you may want to pick up a few molds. Try shopping for these after Easter – you can usually get them for a dollar!

So let’s say you have never used a candy mold before – even if you consider yourself a complete kitchen klutz – you can use this mold. Don’t let the instructions scare you – you can melt the chocolate in a microwave if you don’t have a double boiler just make sure you stir it every twenty seconds so the bottom doesn’t scorch or burn. Work with small amounts so you don’t have to reheat and if you do burn it, it’s no big loss. Since this mold requires almost no detail work, I use a Wilton Squeeze Bottle to get the melted chocolate into the mold – there’s almost no mess and all it takes is a small squeeze and you are done, a great project for kids of all ages to help with, especially if you are working with a ton of these molds. Another option you have to decorate these is to apply the eyes and beak after you pour the chocolate and allow it to set. You can paint on the details with a stippling brush or use the fat end of a toothpick. Either way, these are cute little ducks that are bite sized little pieces of heaven!

Care, Cleaning, Cost

These molds will hold up to a good bit of use but if you handle them with a little tender loving care you will get the most out of them. I clean all my molds by hand; a nice soak in some warm water followed up by scrubbing the insides with a toothbrush usually ensures that they are completely clean. You will want to air dry these so they are bone dry before you store them or use them again because water and chocolate do not mix. If you think you are going to have to make a ton of these, pick up a few of them; they only cost about two dollars at places like Target, Wal-Mart and Michaels so purchasing them or replacing them isn’t a huge expense. Most places sell these for about two dollars but you can expect to pay more if you shop through smaller store or ones that aren’t authorized Wilton resellers. If you can’t find this at a store near you, never fear, you can get it at the Wilton Online Store.

One Duck, Two Duck, Three Duck, Four

There’s no limit to what you can do with the chocolate ducks! My favorite is to make a baby shower cake – stick with me on this – it’s simple to accomplish but a little tough to explain. Make three to four one inch round cakes, allow them to cool them frost with what ever icing you like. I suggest a basic sugar icing since this will stay in a workable state for a while. Have at least fifty of the chocolate ducks ready to go and then assemble the cake. Take left over icing and add a light blue tint to it and pipe it around the bottom of the cake to simulate waves – you may have to do this in layers so you can get a great effect from it. Make sure that you are working on a cake board or something that you will be able to transport the cake on because once you start adding the icing; you won’t be able to shift it to something else. Once you have the water set up, take the ducks and start pressing them into the icing. It is such a cute looking cake and easy to make – much better than picking one up at a bakery and it costs about three to four dollars at the most to make it.

Another great thing to do with these is to make them in different colors and use them as a border on a cake – great for a baby shower or just something silly. I made a few “Duck You” cakes for people and they really got a kick out of it. You can make these in to mini lollipops but they will be a little hard to eat; I suggest using them as decorations on baked goods as an added piece of eye candy – no pun intended. Take popsicle sticks or anything that has a fat edge to it and dip it in melted chocolate then press it on to the back of the duck. Allow to cool then decorate as you wish. You might get a few that won’t adhere to the stick so plan on making a few extra so you aren’t shorthanded. Last piece of advice – these are great if you want to make a Noah’s Ark cake – I mean, can you really have an ark without ducks? Other animal themed molds are available from Wilton, check their online store for more!

The Bottom Line

I have had an absolute ball with this mold and found a ton of great uses for it. I came across a few more of them at an after Easter sale and didn’t think twice about chucking them in the cart. These are so easy to make that anyone, regardless of candy making experience will be able to complete this with no trouble. If you are looking to make some cute ducks for Easter, a baby shower or just as a silly addition to a dessert – this is one of the best molds on the market. Just like all Wilton molds it’s easy to clean, will stand up to a lot of use and the results are exceptional. I can’t wait to try these out with some pastel chocolate for Easter – this year I am planning on making the baskets 100% edible – yeap – 100% chocolate from top to bottom and these little ducks will be the perfect accents for the sides of the baskets!
