| Freak369's Full Review: Wilton Spatch-It |
I have a confession to make, I am a kitchen gadget junkie. My drawers are full of items that I simply thought I couldnt live without and as it turns out I could. One of the better purchases is the Wilton brand Spatch-It. If youve never seen this or used it, chances are it might look pretty strange but I can guarantee that if you give it a try youll love it! The Wilton Spatch-It is a very useful tool for baking, transferring small cookies to the baking sheet and mixing ingredients. I use this almost every time I bake cookies, muffins, cake and biscotti and I bake a lot! If you are a kitchen gadget junkie, you need one of these in your arsenal.
But Freak, What Is It?
If you have never used one of these, I can almost guarantee that if you give it a try you will fall in love with it. Made of a thick yet flexible plastic, this is a kidney shaped tool for scraping the sides of bowls, folding wet and dry ingredients together or transferring mixtures from one bowl to another. I use this when I make biscotti since some of the mixtures tend to be on the thick side and are hard to move around with your hands without heating up the butter or shortening. On the outer edges there is a small [about 1/16th of an inch] ridge that allows you to get under dough or scrape a bowl almost completely clean. This is a great tool to use when you are making cookies that need to be delicately transferred from the cutting surface to the cookie sheet. Using a spatula might wrinkle the edges of the cookie and leave you with a strange shape or distorted image.
This measures six and a half inches across and three and a half inches wide. The thickness is about 1/16th of an inch the same size as the tapered ridge I mentioned earlier. The small cut out hole allows you to hang this up for quick access or to attach to measuring spoon sets that have a looping system. I have never seen these in any other size than the one that I own and if you know if these are made in larger or smaller sizes, please feel free to leave the information in the comment section.
Uses
The primary use for this is to scrape the sides of bowls when making cake batter, cookie dough or any type of baked goods. Since it is flexible it can contort to most mixing bowls to allow you to get the most out of your baking efforts. The only thing that this doesnt work on are extremely small bowls like ramekins or soufflé cups. For those types of bowls you might want to use a small thin spatula instead of trying to cram this into it. If you make any kind of desert and use shortening, this is a must have. This will allow you to mix the ingredients evenly without having to worry about the heat from your hands breaking down the strength of the shortening. The ingenious kidney shape design gives you several different angles to work with and after a while you know which angle works best with which bowl you are using. If this seems a little hard to use at first I strongly urge you to give this an honest try before you toss it in the drawer and send me hate mail.
This is also great for making lasagna or any type of layered foods. Having the flexibility of the Spatch-It to scoop and apply the ingredients cuts down on the preparation time as well as the number of things you need to clean up after. You can also use this to remove dried cookie dough from the counter top or cutting board before you do the general clean up of the area. Again, this is where the flexibility come into play. I know when I roll out the biscotti dough or am making sugar cookies that require sugar crystals to be applied this is an absolute god send when it comes time to start cleaning up.
Clean Up
Since this is flat with only one hole in it [for hanging] the clean up is pretty cut and dry. If you are using anything with a food coloring or color additive I suggest that you try to clean it as soon as possible to avoid staining it. This also goes for any type of strong liquor, syrup or flavoring that you might add to your goodies. Plastic tends to absorb certain scents to try to clean it as quickly as possible. I usually soak mine in hot soapy water and clean it with a scrubber to make sure it is completely clean. I dont put any of my baking accessories in the dishwasher so I have no idea how this would hold up to the heat of the dishwashers washing or drying cycle.
The Bottom Line
This is a must have kitchen and baking tool. Since it is plastic and has no sharp edges, it is the perfect thing for kids to use when helping out. When a spatula just wont cut it use the Wilton Spatch-It! You can find this at most retail locations that sell baking goods and tools or order it directly from the Wilton online store. The normal price of this is around .79 cents which is a small price for the amount of things that this can be used for. I have had mine for about two years now and it had held up just great. There are a few small dings in the sides of it from drawer wear but as a whole it is almost as great as when I purchased it.
As always, thanks for the visit
