Halloween in a true passion for me. As soon as October starts I am dragging out my black and orange plastic totes and digging through my decorations. This year I decided to stock up on some tried and true Winton products; baking pans, cupcake liners, sprinkles and accessories like treat bags, treat sticks and colored sugars. Jo-Anne Fabrics has a small but usually well stocked section for baking; when Halloween rolls around they get a ton of stuff in and this year I had a complete blast when they reduced the Wilton products 50% then down to 60% then to an amazing 70% off. By time things hit 70% off almost all the good stuff was picked through but I did keep my eyes peeled for goodies that some people tried to tuck away for when they dropped the prices. Yes, as hard as it is to believe, there are people that will take things and shove them into sale bins or in the clearance section then go back and get them when they are on sale or clearance. So there, now you know that digging through those bins might just pay off ... it might tick someone else off that their little stash of products is gone but hey, thats the way the cookie [or cupcake] crumbles.
Wilton Spooky Ghost Baking Cups 415-1601
These are standard sized [two inch] backing cups that will fit into almost every sized standard cupcake mold. These can be used for baking cupcakes, muffins, layered treats and one of my favorites, smaller pieces of candy that you want to put out for guests to munch on. This is a nice way to throw something together at the last minute; just take smaller treats like candy corn, snack sized candy bars and anything thats wrapped [check the bulk candy section of your grocery store for smaller sized candies] and toss them into a cupcake pan that you have lined with these cups. It makes a nice centerpiece for a table or just something to have small pieces of candy in. When its running low all you have to do is add more to it. Of course, most people will use these to make cupcakes but they can be used for craft projects or decorations too. I like to take fluted glasses, open up one of these liners and press it inside the glass, then all you have to do is fill it with candy corn. To take things further, take a long tapered candle and put it in the candy corn. Viola... an instant candle holder that looks cool regardless of whether you light it or not.
Its pretty rare to find cupcake liners that have a black background to them so when I saw these I knew that I had to get them. After all, can you really have too many Halloween backing cups in the house? These have a black background to them with large floating ghosts, grinning pumpkins, tiny little candy corns and the word BOO! in a very cool purple with a green glow to it. There are little green dots to fill in some of the dead areas [no pun] so its a very colorful and festive design. Since there are so many different colors to the cup you can have a lot of fun decorating them once you have baked the cupcakes or muffins and allowed them to dry. Purple, white, orange and green are the dominating colors so those are great ones to work with if you are trying to match up the frosting, icing or sprinkles to the baking cups.
If you are looking to get an almost flat cupcake from this [so that you can frost them easily and use a plastic stencil on them] I suggest filling them half way, for a rounded top fill the cups three quarters of the way and if you want a mega cupcake, fill them almost to the top. If you are not using a non stick pan, you may want to spray on a cake release or product like Pam so that the cupcakes or muffins pop out easily and you reduce the risk of having the tops stick and ruining the cupcake if you have to force it out. If this does happen, try using a butter knife to loosen the edges. Someone once told me to put the butter knife in the freezer for a few minutes then try to work the item loose; I did this but I never really noticed a difference. If you are using a standard cake mix that calls for vegetable oil you may see some oil marks on the bottom of the baking cups but since these are a dark color, you wont really notice it unless you are right on top of them inspecting them.
The suggested retail price for these is $1.99, thats what they sell them for at the Wilton Online Store and most retail locations have them for this price until they start dropping the prices a few days before the holiday. If you are a thrifty shopper you will want to watch for the sales and stock up, then just tuck them away until next year and you are good to go. Wilton has several different styles for Halloween baking cups so when they are on sale you can stock up and use a variety of them to bake with. This way you can keep track of what is what - just take one of the baking cups and tape it to an index card then write whats in it on the card. This is really helpful if you have people that will be dropping by who have food allergies. You can keep track of flavors, things you have added and toppings without having to go crazy in the process.
The Bottom Line
These baking cups are extremely cute, will add a lot of color to whatever you are baking in them and dont forget, they are a great way to serve candy and smaller treats like Rice Krispie Treats. I really wish I would have grabbed a few more packs of these when they were on sale for 50% off, by time the price dropped to 70% off they were cleared out of almost every Halloween item that had the Wilton name on it. These can be purchased year round at the Wilton Online Store for $1.99 but before you go and order them, be sure to check stores like Wal-Mart, Target, Michaels and Jo-Anne Fabrics to see if they have them and if they are on sale. If you love Halloween, do a lot of baking for the holiday or are just looking for something to whip up treats to send off to a party, these are a great pick!
As always, thanks for the read!
