| kristinafh's Full Review: Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! |
When I saw the trailers for Win A Date With Tad Hamilton I was like - finally, a no-brainer, fun-filled comedy with a little bit of romance and good music in it.
sigh
I hate it when I'm wrong.
sigh
Here's the story.
Tad Hamilton (Josh Duhamel) used to be the guy in Hollywood with the squeaky image. With cheekbones out to here and boy-next-door good looks, Tad had every producer and director knocking down his door. And then, the tabloids starting catching him drinking, smoking, womanizing, etc.... His agents, Richard Levy (Nathan Lane) and the other Richard Levy (Sean Hayes) are looking for ways to place him back on the clean, squeaky reputation track. They hatch an idea to hold a contest. It would allow people to pay $100 for a chance to win a date with Tad. The proceeds of the contest would go to some children's charity. All they would have to do is make sure that the winner fell into that squeaky-clean category.
Meet Rosalee (Kate Bosworth) and her friends Pete (Topher Grace) and Cathy (Ginnifer Goodwin). They live and work in podunk West Virginia as cashiers (Pete is the manager) of the local piggy wiggly. Janine and Rosalee never miss a Tad movie. They think he is dreamy and fits the perfect guy mold.
Once news travels about this contest, Rosalee enters. Wouldn't you know it! She wins!
At first Tad rolls his eyes at this naive, backwards girl. Eventually though, he is charmed by her innocence and he starts thinking about how he needs to simplify his life.
After the date, Rosalee goes back home. Soon, Tad follows and he takes up residence in her hometown. This doesn't set well with Pete, who has a wild love for the Rosalee chick. He's the right man for her - not this Tad Hollywood Guy.
Who gets the girl?
Who gets the guys?
Don't worry, the story is pretty predictable (so you can figure out that ending) and it has the same look and feel as other teenage-coming-of-age movies (like Pretty In Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful). Writer Victor Levin (Mad About You) doesn't quite know how to write for the big screen. His story is chopped up into parts that are better suited for a soap opera or situation comedy (gee, sorta like Mad About You).
I was pretty disappointed in Director Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde). Aside from making the opening credits splashy, and MTV-like, he didn't seem to put much effort into the movie. I kept on hanging on, waiting for something - some big bang - and there never seemed to be much of a payoff.
I'm familiar with the unknown actor Josh Duhamel because I caught him on All My Children a few years ago. Sure, he's hot and all but he's no JC or Johnny Rzeznik (how did I get on THIS tangent?). He's likable but I'm not sure, all that believable however, I really don't think that anyone was going for "believable" for this character. His chemistry with Kate was fine. His performance was fine. Everything was fine. Is this his breakout role? Is he the new "IT" boy? I don't think so. Don't look for him to become the next Tom Cruise.
The best thing about this movie was Topher Grace. Who cares if he was duplicating his television show character here? Not me. The guy is adorable and lovable - he makes a perfect "Ducky" character for this generation.
Kate Bosworth was too perky and blonde. I didn't like her. And her - Jessica Simpson virgin act - got on my last nerve. That's about the nicest thing I can say about her (for the moment). No indepth analysis. I hope I don't see her again for awhile.
Nathan Lane and Sean Hayes were just puppets. Their characters were dime-stored bought. Disappointing that they have to resort "B" movies. People must have pictures on them fer sure.
Win A Date With Tad Hamilton is rated PG-13 for sexual content (not nearly enough!), some drug references, and language. Skip this one. Video will be fine enough.
