kjscrafts's Full Review: Wizards of Waverly Place: Wizard School
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.
This DVD contains 4 episodes of the Disney Channel show, Wizards of Waverly Place. The show is about a wizard family living in New York City. The mother is not a wizard and the father is a wizard without powers. The couple has three kids, who currently all have powers, but eventually only the best will get to keep their powers because only one child per wizard family gets to keep their powers as an adult. The show is about the dad training the kids to become their best and the troubles the kids end up in when their spells go wrong or they do not properly foresee the consequences of using magic.
The first episode is called “Wizard School Part 1.” In this episode the two older Russo kids (Justin and Alex) go to Wizard School, which is somewhat Hogwarts-like. Alex, the slacker, is challenged and ends up in trouble involving cleaning floors because of her slacking. In the meantime Justin excels at everything and is recruited to take part in a 12-ball (a ping pong like game with up to 12 balls) tournament. Alex discovers that there is an evil motive behind the tournament.
The second episode is the conclusion of the first and is called “Wizard School Part 2.” In this episode Alex tries to get Justin to quit the tournament, but he refuses to believe her that something bad will happen if he wins.
In the third episode, which is called “Curb Your Dragon,” Alex buys Justin a pet dragon that is disguised as a beagle. It is her way of trying to make up to him for letting his old dog (memory from before the show’s timeline begins) loose, which was never found. Justin stills aches from the loss and soon may be in for another heartbreak when the dragon dog goes missing. Alex works with her brothers to try and get the dragon dog back.
The final episode on this DVD is called “Disenchanted Evening.” This episode is about Alex trying to get her parents to allow them to do magic outside of training time. Her plot involves getting the help of a wizard boy she meets at school that is allowed to do magic whenever he wants to try to convince her parents to allow her to, too. The plan backfires, though, when she learns he is able to because he has put a spell on his parents.
The only Bonus Feature on this DVD is called Backstage Disney Work It Like a Wizard. This is a behind the scenes interview like short with the cast that plays the wizard kids. They talk about various topics including what it is like playing a wizard, about themselves, and participating in the Disney Channel Games.
Overall I enjoyed this DVD because I love the show. Mostly I enjoyed it because I have missed several episodes of the show and 3 of the ones on this DVD were actually new to me. As a DVD release of an active TV show, though, it is a little limited in Special Features and not much worth purchasing because they still regularly show the episodes as repeats. Thus I am glad I rented it instead of purchasing it.
