Wolverine and the X-Men: Revelation — Can You Handle the Truth?
Written: Aug 8, 2012 (Updated Aug 8, 2012)
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Stellar writing, stories and animation; voice acting is superb; compelling drama
Cons:Only five episodes on disc
The Bottom Line: Wolverine and the X-Men: Revelation definitely reveals some very shocking turn of events, which starts to lead to the conclusion. I definitely didn't see that coming.
The mystery behind the current state of affairs is starting to come to light in Wolverine and the X-Men, Volume 5: Revelation. However, is it enough for the X-Men to act upon and prevent the future dystopia as witnessed by Professor Xavier? A lot of the puzzle pieces start to fit together to paint a very interesting picture but it’s all moot if the team cannot come together in time.
“Guardian Angel” Warren Worthington, aka Angel, is at odds with his father, who has been supporting the Mutant Response Division. This means he has been providing these mutant hunters with the robotic Sentinels. But when Angel is severely injured during an encounter with the Sentinels, his own salvation to becoming better is at the hands of Mr. Sinister.
“Breakdown” Cyclops is an absolute wreck ever since Jean Grey went missing. He is becoming a detriment to the team to the point that he wants to erase his memories of Jean. Emma Frost volunteers to do the job. But as they dig deep into Scott’s past, he finds a clue to what really happened when Jean disappeared... and it’s a huge clue!
“Rover” In the future, Marrow has adopted a damaged Sentinel and named it Rover, much to the fears of the other members of her team. Bishop definitely questions her wisdom in keeping company with a mutant killing machine but Marrow believes Rover can overcome its programming and become a friend.
“Aces & Eights” Gambit is off on a mission to steal Magneto’s helmet on the behalf of Senator Kelly. This is an action that is led to believe to lead into the creation of Master Mold. It’s up to Nightcrawler to go back to Genosha and see what is going on before the wheels turn in place.
“Shades of Grey” Jean Grey is finally discovered at a local hospital. Cyclops and Emma Frost rush to free her but Mr. Sinister is one step ahead of them. He sends the newly minted Archangel to retrieve the powerful telepath which in turn leads into a confrontation against his former teammates. But there is far more to Sinister’s plans than ever imagined.
This fifth edition of Wolverine and the X-Men really hits on all cylinders. The pace has definitely picked up with some very interesting twists and turns. The whole reason starts to center around a single person: Jean Grey. Her factor into the scenario definitely raises the stakes as to what is coming and how it affects everyone involved. But this doesn’t happen until the team starts to come together, and that’s what these five episodes have done. There is less Wolverine and more X-Men. That’s not to say Wolverine isn’t integral but now we see the team starting to really rally around one another. I’m also glad to see Cyclops get out of his funk and stop being a one-tracked mind individual. It’s funny how the roles have reversed in this series: Wolverine is the team player and Cyclops is the loner.
The stories are compelling and stellar. The writers really have fleshed out where this is all heading and have done so at a good pace. The animation is really good as well with amazing voice talents to complement the characters.
Wolverine and the X-Men, Volume 5: Revelation is full value for the money despite this only being five episodes. These are integral episodes that propel the lingering questions and starts answering the mysteries abound. It also opens up a new direction that really takes things up another notch and makes you really want to see how this all ends.
