Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
The Wolves of Kromer is a gay werewolf movie. Let that sink in a moment.
This movie is described as "A delicious mix of fairy tale, romance and gay allegory." And that is just about right.
The story is set in the English or Welsh countryside. Seth is a young wolf, just admitting to his wolfishness, and recently run away from home. He meets Gabriel, a more experienced shaggier wolf who oozes sex appeal from every pore. They fall in together, Gabs showing the cub the ropes.
Now, a side note on costuming and allegory. Wolves have pointed ears and tails, and wear fur coats. That's it. There is no American Werewolf in London special effects here. And if you inserted the word "Pouf" for "Wolf" it would almost work, though they do talk about their tales and fangs etc. This is an allegory. Wolves are gay.
At the same time, in the same area we see two old women, Fanny and Doreen, plotting to kill Fanny's employer for the inheritance. To make the allegory clearer, these are Hags. They are evil women, living in polite society.
These two storylines move forward simultanously. The hags plot to kill Mrs Drax and blame it on Wolves. The wolves try to eek out an existance, preferably "non-pack" if Gabriel has his way. (Think gay man tired of the bar scene.)
The waters are further muddied when Mrs. Drax's son and family arrive. Mrs. Drax has the bad grace to survive the insulin under the fingernails, and Fanny and Doreen have to set up another method of doing away with the mistress.
Add to the mix the local Priest, ministering to Mrs. Drax, and very aware of the dangers wolves pose to good christian souls.
Mrs Drax does meet her end, and the wolves are blamed. Hunted and scorned, Seth and Gabriel are growing ever closer, until something happens to drive a wedge between them.
The film is an allegory, about the villification of the Homosexual. In this small community, we see the true face of evil, and it is not wolves. We see the pettiness and one upsmanship of the hags, we see the Drax family, isolated and drifting apart, struggle with the day to day issues of family life; work, time management, teenage angst, all the little things that drive us mad. None of these things have anything what so ever to do with the wolves.
When the great wolf hunt begins, it is the priest leading the charge. He takes Kester Drax, the son of the family under his wing, and they spend much time in the fields making life very interesting for Seth and Gabriel.
But as the Priest obsession grows, Kester begins to see him as he truly is, a man feeding his own needs. He wants Kester's admiration, and realizing this, Kester can only pity him.
Meanwhile the hags move to cover their tracks, the task made more difficult by their constant bickering, and by their greed.
The end, like so many allegories about the homosexual, is tragic. The aftermath, even moreso. Only when the credits roll are we thrown a crumb to assuage the horror of it all.
Despite this, this is a wickedly enjoyable film. The production value is...primative. Good camera work, etc, but you get the feeling this was made on the production budget of a Roger Corman flick.
That said, the acting is great. The wolves are cute, both physically, and as a couple of cubs making their way in the world. The hags are superlative; old, bitter, mendacious. Very much the backbone of small country churches everywhere.
The priest in many ways is the finest performance in the piece, going from virtuous spiritual leader to leader of the lynch mob over the course of the story. He is hero, villain, and victim of this tale.
This is not a cinematic event. It is a little indie film. But it is good, and what it lacks in budget, it makes up for in charm. And it will make you think.
