Few candies have the pluck and charm of Willy Wonka's Runts. In Chewy Runts the classic Wonka powder candy is chewified, making for a more vigorous and cultured candy eating experience.

This wondrous chewy Wonka center is encased in the same thin, chompable hard-candy shell in yellow, red, orange, pink, blue, and green varieties. In case the colors and flavors are insufficient for attempts to properly associate the candies with the fruits they represent (as is not uncommon in the realm of fruit-flavored candy), Willy Wonka has supplied the added-value of approximate fruit shapes.

The yellow comes in a distinct banana crescent, the red has a divot on top where a cherry stem might be, and the pink is as heart-shaped as a perfect strawberry. Unfortunately this system breaks down as the green comes in a distinct lime shape, contrary to the Willy Wonka website's claims of a watermelon flavor, and the blue (the newcomer to the Runts block) is identical in form to the red, giving no indication of what the website describes as blue raspberry.

Despite these failings Chewy Runts are the fruitiest fruit-flavored candies in the Wonka line, and while the bananas are sometimes more fun to play with (they make great eyebrows, lips, etc.) than to eat, the strawberries are worth setting aside and saving for dessert.

A 1.85 oz. pouch of Chewy Runts will contain ingredients typical of Wonka candies, which is to say sugar and a bunch of artificial gibberish. What may be surprising, and is probably the secret of Runts superiority over similar candies, is the fact that in addition to providing something like 17% of your daily recommended allowance for carbohydrates in the form of sugar, a bag of Chewy Runts will also give you something like 7% of your saturated fat.

Hey, if it only takes 17.5 calories from fat to taste that good, my hairy midsection must be the most mouth-watering piece of flesh that Wonka hasn't yet transformed into some kind of chewy candy.
