| Javelina's Full Review: Hasbro Woodboard Puzzle - Abby Cadabby |
Around age 2.5, my daughter really got into puzzles. And about the same time, I had my second baby, so we stocked up on puzzles to keep my toddler occupied while we busy with the new baby. I actually found a whole bunch of puzzles at our local consignment shop, including this one and the Elmo one that is incorrectly listed as the product photo.
I believe I got this puzzle for around $3 at the consignment shop, and although I have seen similar puzzles in stores, I haven't seen this exact one. I think brand new this puzzle would be around $7, but I'm really not sure.
This puzzle has a total of 9 pieces, and the material is "woodboard", which seems like something like particleboard. The top of the puzzle has a bright, colorful shiny finish to it, and the undersides of the pieces and the puzzle board are blank. The 9 pieces lift out of the hard board which also has a border to it, so you are inlaying the puzzle pieces into the board as you complete the puzzle.
The image on this puzzle is Abby Cadabby from Sesame Street, and her image takes up most of the board, with just some grass, bushes and 3 butterflies in the background.
It seems like most of these puzzles are for ages 3+, but this puzzle is perfect for my 2.5 year old. A lot of the 3+ puzzles have 12 pieces minimum, so it is nice that this one has 9, making it one of the easier ones.
In addition, I like that each piece is very individual, meaning that it has a unique character to it. Some puzzles that we have purchased have too many pieces that look alike and my toddler gets frustrated because it is too difficult. For instance, with this puzzle is obvious where one leg needs to go next to another, or that the wings need to go on Abby's back. I can direct my daughter where to put the pieces without having to do it for her ("here is her hand" type of thing).
This puzzle has held up very well, despite being already used from the consignment shop, as well as taking a beating at home. My toddler is always stepping on pieces and they end up getting beaten up, but the puzzle is in good shape. The edges and corners look sort of "rubbed" where the color is starting to wear off, but there are no broken or warped pieces.
The nice thing too is that the pieces go on the board, so you can carry the puzzle around. You can also do the puzzle virtually anywhere - on a bed, on the carpet, a chair, etc. It makes it much easier to entertain a child without the frustration of not being able to do it on softer or uneven surfaces.
Overall, this is a great first puzzle. It has held up well, and my toddler really likes Abby Cadabby so there is definite appeal there. This is much better than a lot of other puzzles that don't have unique pieces and can't be assembled on carpeting etc because they are lacking a board.
I should mention that I also like the Elmo puzzle (pictured in the product listing, incorrectly of course). The puzzles are slightly less unique, but my toddler enjoys that puzzle just as much, and it has the same durability.
