Pros: fun, free, addictive
Cons: addictive, ads on the free version can be annoying
I recently was lucky enough to get an iPhone 4s. This was my first venture into the world of Apple and I am seriously hooked. One of the first Apps that I got for my iPhone was the Words with Friends App that I got for free from the app store. To here if you would like to read my iPhone 4s Review
Downloading the App
I am new to the iPhone world but it was easy enough to find Words with Friends. I think my daughter recommended it so I went to the App Store and searched for it. It is actually quite popular so you may find it just by looking in the most popular Apps. There is a free version which is what I got. With the free version you have to put up with a few ads so if you think you will play it a lot buying the App might be worthwhile. I have considered upgrading to the paid app but have not as of yet. The paid App costs $2.99
When you pick the app you want you will have to enter an itunes name and password even though it's free. The app downloads in seconds and then its time to start playing.
Connecting with Friends
The easiest way to connect with friends is through facebook. There is a prompt if you go into the app that shows you how to connect with facebook which is what I did. This populated a list of my friends who are already playing the game. You can also invite Facebook friends who are not already playing through the App.
If you have friends you are playing with who are not on facebook, you can ask them their user name and search for them by name. I did this with my husband who is not into facebook and it worked just fine.
You can also send friends a text message or email with an invite.
Playing the Game
Words with Friends is very much like scrabble with similar pieces and scoring. The special extra points spaces are in different location than scrabble but it works the same way starting from the center.
The nice thing about this game is that you do not have to sit down and play a whole game. Of course you can, but generally I will make a few moves when I have time and then let it go. I play with a few friends and family members and look forward to my words with friends time.
The App saves your games for you and keeps track of your wins and losses. If someone invites you to play a game and you don't want to play you can decline the game. I have done this a few times by accident so make sure if you don't want to play right then that you don't hit decline by accident because you won't get the chance to go back and play again later. You can always accept and then just take your turn later.
Chatting While Playing
Built into the App is a function where you can chat with your friends while playing or leave them a message. On my iphone it shows up looking the same way the text message do on the iphone. I know that some of my friends play this with me on their computer so I am not sure what their experience is, but we seem to be able to chat away just fine.
Turning on Prompts
If you turn on prompts for this game a little pop up will appear on your iphone when your friend has sent you a message or if it is your turn to play. I have my prompts turned on for this app and that way if I hear the little sound on my phone and I have time I can go take my turn.
