The Bottom Line: This product isn't right for me but it may be for you. If you are looking for a low carb drink, this one isn't bad.

| jo.com's Full Review: Worldwide Ultra Pure Protein Shake |
I workout at a gym, am a Personal Trainer and am always trying new products. I recently reviewed
Carbo Rush made by WorldWide Sport Nutrition as is Ultra Pure Protein Shake.
What is Pure Protein?
Pure Protein is a liquid drink, (It also comes in a powdered form.) which comes in a 12-ounce metal can with a pop-top like you would find on a soda can. These tops have their pros and cons. They are certainly convenient since I dont need a can opener at the gym, but unless I have a cup to pour it in, drinking out of metal, for me, is not that pleasant. It is considered a dietary supplement and made by WorldWide Sport Nutrition the makers of
Pure Protein Bar
~There is a clear expiration date on the bottom of the can.
~It is a gluten-free product with no added sugar. The very low 2 grams of sugar is coming from the lactose in this shake. Pure Protein is considered a high protein, low carbohydrate, low fat protein shake. It contains no aspartame.
~It comes in 5 flavors. I have 2 of them- Frosty Chocolate and Cappuccino. They each have slightly different nutritional analysis. They are very similar but because they are not exact, I will average the numbers off. If you have this product, perhaps in a different flavor, the numbers may not match exactly and that is why.
It has 140 calories, 70 mg of sodium, 160 mg of potassium, 2 grams of fat, (no saturated fat), 9 grams of cholesterol, 6 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of sugar, 4 grams of fiber and 35 grams of protein.
Other ingredients are: water, a protein blend, ingredients that will depend on what flavor you have, for example cocoa or decaf coffee, natural and artificial flavors, and sucralose. (non-caloric sweeteners)
According to the company "Weve incorporated our special proprietary "Low Glycemic Sweetener Complex" that has no aspartame. There are many imitators, but the Ultra Pure Protein Shake is the standard by which all shakes are judged.
The glycemic index is the entry rate of a carbohydrate into the bloodstream. The lower the index, the slower the rate of absorption and the slower the carbohydrate turns to sugar in your body."
Flavors:
Frosty Chocolate, Ice Cream Vanilla, Strawberry Cream, Cappuccino and Orange Cream
What it does and for whom is it?
Ultra Pure Protein is really designed for the person who is eating a low carbohydrate diet. We know that carbohydrates are the energy source in our bodies but there are many people who are on the Atkins Diet who want fewer carbohydrates. I have been there as well and fluctuate between various formulas. This is so different than Carbo Rush which has 70 grams of carbohydrates rather than 6! If it is the protein you want, though, 35 grams is a significant number. Protein supplements are used to improve a persons general nutritional diet, or to specifically help build muscle tissue after workouts.
It is suggested that you drink 1 shake daily as a protein dietary supplement or anytime as a nutritional supplement. It is best when chilled and please shake it well for the best taste.
It is for adults only. Although there are no directions that say that, I am suggesting that this not be given to children.
So it is intended as a nutritional or dietary supplement and in my opinion best used after a workout if you are taking it to the gym. Unlike Carbo Rush, this isnt going to give you the energy you need during a workout or before, in my opinion.
What did it do for me?
Actually nothing tangible. I thought I might like it when I finished a workout and want a meal, though it really isnt a meal replacement drink since a meal replacement drink should have more carbohydrates in it. I am not on Atkins so I do want carbohydrates. I need energy, whatever time of the day it is, and I have found that Ultra Pure Protein just doesnt give that to me. If I dont have time to eat I would prefer a bar, noted above.
I do like the fact that it has so little sugar and that is hard to find unless you buy low carbohydrate foods, You will find a correlation between carbohydrates and sugar. Low carbs usually means less sugar so if sugar is a concern for you, then this would be a better choice than Carbo Rush or Pure Protein Bar.
I am hypoglycemic, which means that my blood sugar levels rise when I consume sugar or simple carbohydrates in large quantities. I had no hypoglycemic feelings at all from Carbo Rush. If you are buying Ultra Pure Protein as a workout related drink, I would think twice.
What does it taste like?
The taste is decent although as I said, though I dont mind drinking from a soda can, I do not like any shakes from a metal can. The shakes themselves often have a metallic taste even out of the can, so if you take one with you, take a cup along. In spite of the lack of sugar, it is slightly sweet (I keep saying it is low sugar, but as noted, it contains sucralose.)
I find it too thin. If I am going to have a shake I want it thick. The only way around that would be to put it in a blender with some powder, fruits and ice and you would get a real shake.
Ultra Pure Protein leaves a slight aftertaste though it isnt as bad as others I have had. I do usually drink a lot of water after I drink this both because I drink water and to get the taste out of my mouth. I love chocolate so I do prefer the Frosty Chocolate to the Cappuccino, but what I have said above goes for that flavor as well.
My final thoughts:
This is not a product I will buy again. I have no use for it. There are too many products on the market that I would recommend before this one and I will leave some of my reviews at the bottom.
Although I do want to compare this to Carbo Rush, they are truly so different with Carbo Rush meeting some needs and Pure Protein not meeting any of mine.
Update: March 2- Based on a comment and my thinking about this I am not recommending this product. If you would like, please read the comments. The issue is that the protein comes from milk, not soy or whey.
Update 2: March 4- I really like to accurately review and recommend a product. I had a couple of cans and drank one last night. I have a cold, didn't feel like eating, but knew I needed some protein. I put the Shake into a container, with ice, and a straw and it was good. My throat hurts, so it was cold and gave me the chocolate I love so much. It is certainly more expensive than a lot of protein foods you can eat, but for this purpose it worked well. Again, it isn't a product that I will buy again, but I feel the company didn't mislead me in any way. Thus I am going back to recommending it with 3 stars.
Feel free to e-mail me or leave a comment if you have any questions.
