| waldo53's Full Review: Wusthof Culinar 8-inch Cook's Knife |
For years I have resisted spending money on good knives. Many people would tell me they are no better then the cheap ones at Target and Kmart. After taking some cooking classes and listening to experts, I decided to acquire an expensive knife. It has turned out to be one of the best knives I have owned.
The knife is unbelievably sharp and durable. I use it all the time and it has not lost any of the sharpness. It is has very solid construction. You can tell by the weight. It is over twice has heavy as one of my cheap knives. Maybe even 4 times heavier. The ergonomic handle is great. Makes a long day of chopping and slicing much easier on the hands. Very well balanced also, which makes for chopping onions a much easier task.
For you people that have a functioning dishwasher, they are marked as not for use in the dishwasher. Just thought I would point that fact out here.
Also, I did not receive any kind of sheath and it will not fit into my current wood knife block. The knife is much thicker then my cheapo knife of the same length. Just keep this mind as you want to keep it safe during storage. The box it comes in should work for a while but it is big and hard to store.
This six-inch version works well for small and medium sized items. But I will probably purchase an 8 inch for larger things such as large onions and large potatoes.
As pleased as I am with the knife, I'm not sure when I would have actually spent the money for a Wusthof. I was skeptical and resistant to spending this amount of money. I ended up using yahoo points for a cooking.com gift certificate and got it for free!! Can't beat that! But know that I own one I will buy more. In my opinion Wusthof knives are worth the money and I would recommend them to any serious cook who spends a lot of time chopping and slicing. But if the most complex your cooking gets is adding a can of soup to some precut meat in the crockpot, you probably do not need this knife. Something cheaper like Chicago Cutlery will due.
