| pbyaeger's Full Review: Wusthof-Trident Grand Prix Knife Set |
Before I registered for my Wusthof Grand Prix knives at
Williams Sonoma, I had ordinary department store knives.
They weren't something I had to think about--and when one
dulled or warped, I threw it out.
So, when I saw the prices, I was a bit daunted. These
knives are not cheap. However, I'd heard that good knives
were an investment for a lifetime, and so I said yes.
My first decisions were Wusthof versus Henckels.
Wusthof won because they felt better in my hand,
and I was concerned that you could buy the others anywhere
and everywhere, including discount stores. Not that I'm a
knife snob, but if the company is pumping out all these
knives, are they really paying attention to quality?
Next, I had to choose Classic vs. Grand Prix. I went for
the latter, again, based entirely on the feel in my hand.
My parents have Classic and they seem slimmer and more
lightweight.
Finally, I selected a block to store the knives, and registered
for a set of 9 basics, with sharpening steel. I also registered
for kitchen shears.
Bless our friends--they quickly bought the knives, the block,
and the shears--and they have turned out to be our best gift.
My husband, who saw no point in expensive knives before, now
insists on Wusthof, and is proud to wield the sharpening steel.
It's a subjective thing, really--but we both are impressed with
the feel and performance of our Wusthof Grand Prix knives. We've
added to our collection and are now ready for a bigger block.
My favorites--my large chef's knife, and my 5" paring knife--and
of course the shears. With those, I can do it all. He loves his
tomato knife and his santoku (also known as the santuko) which is
sort of a mini-cleaver. The shears are great for cutting raw
chicken, however, it feels a bit like human flesh, so we both
have to be careful.
Although Wusthof doesn't recommend it, we put our knives in the
dishwasher. That way, they're sterilized with each use.
Our next goal, once we have the new block, is a set of Wusthof
Grand Prix steak knives. The Classic style is available everywhere,
but the GPs seem to be harder to find. They also seem quite expensive.
Almost five years after our first Wusthof, our knives are like new,
and with minimal effort on our part. We think they're our finest
kitchen investment.
