Wyler’s Mrs. Grass Homestyle Chicken Noodle Soup – Not Bad, With a Lot of Help

Pros:Easy to make

Cons:Lacks flavor unless a lot of added ingredients are used

The Bottom Line: Wyler's Mrs. Grass Homestyle Chicken Noodle Soup mix is easy to make but is lacking in flavor, unless you add extra vegetables, chicken, and broth.

On the weekends we often have a family dinner at my mom’s house where I’m normally in charge of the meal.  The meals range from homemade spaghetti to chili to something more exotic like Greek lamb yuvetsi.  This past weekend my mom reached into her pantry dug out one of those dry soup mixes intended to replicate homemade soup without as much work.

When I saw the brand name, Wyler’s Mrs. Grass, I wasn’t too hopeful.  I had tried their Noodle Soup about a year ago as a change from Lipton’s version, which we keep on hand to soothe colds and flues.  Compared to Lipton, Wyler’s Mrs. Grass was almost flavorless and what flavor it did have seemed off in an artificial flavoring way.

But my Mom wanted me to give this “homestyle” soup a try so here I was.

The Soup

Wyler’s Mrs. Grass Homestyle Chicken Noodle Soup comes as a dry mix in a 5.93 ounce package.  The soup mix contains egg noodles, dry chicken, dehydrated carrots and celery, and seasonings.

At its most basic level the soup base can be combined with 8 cups of water to produce 8 servings of, what I’m guessing would be, fairly flavorless soup.  This is essentially the stove top recipe.  The package also includes a crock pot recipe that adds 1 lb of diced raw chicken.  In addition they recommend adding cooked chicken, extra vegetables, more noodles, cooked turkey, and cheese.  I’m not so sure about the cheese but adding more vegetables is certainly a good idea.

Our Experience

I decided to go the crock pot route but given my previous experience with Wyler’s Mrs. Grass Noodle Soup I decided to tweak the recipe a little bit.  I started by increasing the raw chicken to 1 ½ lbs and used 4 cups of chicken broth along with 4 cups of water.  To this I added about 1 ½ cups diced carrot, 1 cup diced celery, and a ½ cup diced sweet onion.

After the requisite 4 hours cooking time we sat down to a dinner of the soup, a salad, and bruschetta topped with a homemade asiago and artichoke hearts spread.  My first impression is that without the added chicken, broth, and vegetables this soup would be very bland.  Even with the added ingredients it was still a bit flat and could have stood with more salt and other seasonings.  As a matter of fact if I was to make this again I’d use 8 cups of broth in lieu of all the water.  That’s not likely because I’d rather make the whole thing from scratch with a whole quartered chicken.

From a convenience stand point this mix isn’t bad with the addition of the vegetables, chicken, and broth.  Even with the time it takes to prep those additional ingredients it is faster that making the entire dish from scratch.  Just don’t expect it to taste like a slow cooked chicken noodle soup.

I’m not opposed to trying another brand of ‘soup starter’ mix but Mrs. Grass leaves too much to be desired in the flavor department.
