"I Daresay, A Decent Metal for the Fairway"

Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros:Very Long, Very reasonably Priced, Lots'O'Distance
Cons:Whippy Shaft, Dead Feel, Lack of Workability
The Bottom Line: Due to the distance per dollar ratio, and the fact that this club is legal, I much prefer it to "The Hammer Driver." It's a good buy for The Newbie.
Are the golf infomercials driving you nuts lately? New drivers, new wedges, new techno-gizmos for training. Well this may not be available at your big box golf store, and Lord only knows you won't find it in too many pro shops. (at least not in any of the ones trying to maintain a semblance of self respect)Trouble is, it's actually a decent fairway metal at a very reasonable price. Oh for sure you won't see it on tour. It's just not the kind of thing the pros are looking for. It's not very workable, and it's awfully huge looking at adress for a fairway metal, but she will definitely launch the ball. Here's what a recent test drive at one of my favourite training courses revealed about this club.

Well yes and know. No problem whatsoever with club head awareness throughout the swing. Afterall, this thing has got a monster head on it for a 5 wood. Seems to me I've hit many a persimmon driver w/a smaller head than this behemoth. The shaft, however, though well mated to this weird looking thing, sported a shade too much whip to her for my taste. Keep in mind though, this thing, and her larger sibling "The Hammer Driver" were put together for slower swing speeds. A well grooved 85 MPH smooth stroke swept (as most fairway metal strokes are meant to be) delivered excellent distance and pretty good accuracy. It just felt weird at the transition from backswing into down swing because that huge honkin' head, mated to the very whippy shaft had a sort of "insta-lag" built into it. Once I adapted to this I was fine. Just keep in mind, a shaft with that much whip doesn't adapt too well for workability. Straight line and baby draws were great. The high cut was just not a viable option.
DISTANCE-- 5 Stars
I was really impressed with this club's straight line distance. The only time I've ever hit fairway metals this long was when I used to buy the old Orlimar Trimetal Drivers and re-adapt them for sweeping balls off the carpet. Their deep faced driver heads were about the same size as this thing's head. It is, despite the 22* of loft (somewhat weak for a 5 wood), able to achieve a boring trajectory. It shoots easily as strong as most companie's 4 woods, and longer than many other companie's 3 woods. Very impressive!
FEEL-- 2 Stars
A real old thuddy duddy in this department. Dead as a door knob, and not much feedback. As with "The Hammer Driver" the Zolex face is indeed harder than either Titanium or Maraging Steel. That has it's good points. It does, however, emphasize a rather strong weak point---no rebound. The lack of rebound leads to a lack of feedback, which leads to a player being a bit slow on the uptake when it comes to fixing swing flaws on the fly. If you can't feel it--you can't fix it.
ACCURACY-- 3 Stars
Actually it goes pretty much where you aim it--but it doesn't steer worth a darn. Forget working the ball left or right with any amount of consistency. If all you want from your fairway metal is distance and a straight line--great. Otherwise this thing is just not going to help you out much. For beginners who need long and straight, or older golfers who have been ravaged by Arthritis, Bursitis, etc... long and straight can be a blessing.
I found this to be a very fun club to hit. I had to remember that the whippy shaft meant every stroke had to be a smooth one if I didn't want to suffer the slings and arrows of pull hooks and duck hooks, but, once I adapted to that conccept the distance was great. I let my hybrids take up the slack in the workability department. If you are just beginning to play this very over priced game, or you need long and straight distance on the cheap, this club is a viable option. Keep in mind that the huge head doesn't work too well in tight lies, but that's what your hybrids are for.
