X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) Directed by Gavin Hood
[Snikt! Logan pops the adamantium claws.] Victor Creed: Oooh, Shiny. Logan: You're gonna die for what you did to her! Victor Creed: Do you even know how to kill me? Logan: I'm gonna cut your G*ddamn head off. See if that works. [Creed laughs]
Mutation is a constant process. This is borne out in the opening sequence, taking place in 1845. James Howlett (Troye Sivan) discovers the world he knew was a lie; his father was not his father, his friend Dog (Michael-James Olsen) was his brother, his mother's love was not unconditional, and he is a patricide. Bone spurs spout from his fists as he encounters his father's murderer, and in exacting revenge, his old life is gone. Now called Logan (Hugh Jackman) and his brother, Victor Creed, (Leiv Schreiber) live a life doing what they do best; war. First, the Civil War...Union side...and onward until he is found by William Stryker (Danny Huston), a government black ops manager who is building a team of super powered operatives for the covert, dirty, wet work the government doesn't want acknowledged.
Fred Dukes (Kevin Durand) is pretty much immovable; Cannon fire is no big deal. Agent Zero (Daniel Henney) is an acrobatic sure shot with no morals, John Wraith (Will i Am) is a teleporter. Bradley (Dominic Monaghan) is able to control all things electronic. And Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is pretty much the perfect mercenary...except for his mouth. (Talk about type casting...) Of course, there was Logan and Victor, the claw brothers, with their ability to heal any wound.
But in Nigeria, while looking for a rare element...Adamantium...when an innocent village is about to pay the price for not knowing how to find more, Logan opts out. He walks away.
Years later, Logan is a lumberjack, and he's okay, he works all day, and at night he goes home to Kayla Silverfox (Lynn Collins) a school teacher who understands his past, and is tolerant of the damage his claws do to the sheets. But all that comes to an end when Stryker comes back into his life. Someone is hunting the old team. And Stryker proves to be right...and the hunter is Creed.
Back into the world of black ops, covert operations, shady characters, and thieves. Logan can't beat the larger, more feral Creed; but Stryker knows how to help. And Logan agrees, becoming Weapon X. Adamantium is bonded to his skeleton, making him virtually indestructible. He is reborn; as Wolverine. Of course, Stryker is not going to spend a billion dollars without expecting something in return. The question is...what is it he wants? Lies in layers, the only truth that Logan is sure of is that Stryker is collecting mutants...like Scott Summers (Tim Pocock, a great choice to physically match James Marsden) and taking them to a mysterious island. And the only person who might know where it's located is the only successful escapee, a Cajun rogue Remy LeBeau (Taylor Kitsch) AKA Gambit.
When you are surrounded by lies and illusions, sometimes the best way to deal with it is to cut through the web, straight towards your goal. And is anyone better suited to the job?
The Analysis
Fans of the X Trilogy will love this movie. It falls in line with that mythology perfectly. Hardcore fan boys of the books may be less enthusiastic of some of the liberties. But let me tell you, this movie has a lot to make the fans happy. First, it is chockfull of mutant favorites; Gambit, the Blob, Sabretooth (though he is never called that) Cyclops, and a diamond skinned girl named Emma...hmm...
Second, it is chockfull of action, explosions, fight scenes, gore and violence.
Third; it has Hugh Jackman naked.
Fourth; it has Hugh Jackman naked.
Fifth; it has ...oh, heck, you know where this is going.
And the movie has surprising emotional depth. Okay, lots of dark tumultuous emotions, but hey, these are dark and tumultuous characters. Always have been; since Wolverine was created by Len Wein and John Romita and Sabretooth by Chris Clairmonte and John Byrne. Lord knows the Weapon X program has been an exploration of the darkest side of government operations. Of course, it is only in funny books that the government would hold citizens on foreign soil without due process of law.....
The cinematography is brilliant, the special effects are great, the explosions are pretty, plentiful, and actually move the plot along. And there is a plot; drawn from various comic lines, notably, Origins, and given enough of a twist to make sure even the most conversant fanboys are surprised.
I had high hopes for this movie. After the "leaked" reviews, I was worried. Now I wonder if the leak wasn't a decoy for pirates, because I found very little to complain about, and much to love. And Hugh Jackman gets naked.
Of course, this is part of my I Need a Hero! Write Off!
