| bloodymadness's Full Review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine |
Wolverine is my favorite X-Men character. Ever since I was 6 years old I have grown up on reading stories about the Crazy ol' Canuck with adamantium claws that can can slice and dice just about any substance on earth. Because of my love for comics I am always among the skeptical comic readers that analyzes every detail in a film based on a comic book to make sure that it is accurate to the book. More tims than not the film does not adhere to the book, but for the most part I overlook the slight flaws in plot. The X-Men Trilogy is a perfect example of a franchise that was enjoyable and didn't stray too much from the original source. The Wolverine film follows in the same vein as the aforementioned films and comes across as rather enjoyable.
As the title of the film implies X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a film that gives the backstory of arguably the most popular X-Men in the Marvel Universe. Basing its storyline on such comics as the Origin series from 2001, Wolverine flows between comic sources and the previous X-Men films to weave a story that tries to not only satisfy fans of the comic, but also to logically fit with the X-Men movie franchise. It's a rather difficult job, but the film does it rather well. Not to say that there were not times when I thought "this is not in the comics," but still, the plot was okay enough to keep Logan involved in a constant state of action and combat. That's basically what people want to see anyways when Wolverine is on screen. They want to see him fight and take someone out like how only he can. That's why Wolverine is so cool, because he is the bet at what he does.
Acting wise, the film is hit or miss Hugh Jackman does a great job as Wolverine (as always) and rarely does he miss a step. Liev Schreiber plays Victor, aka Sabretooth, who is Wolverine's half-brother. Liev plays a cool villain that enjoys hunting and killing mutants for the sheer joy of it. Both actors are simply on screen and neither overplays his respective parts. Other actors fill their roles well but it is sadly the film sometimes falls into the "comic book movie" conventions of hokey acting. The acting could have been better, but it does not take away from the film either.
The fight scenes are superb. The combat scenes are fast paced and kept me on my toes. Wolverine takes alot of hits in this one and his admantium skeleton is pushed to the limit. Whether he is stabbed in the back by a kitana sword, pushed in front of a moving semi or just taking bullets in the head, Wolverine does not get it easy in this film.
X-Men Origins is a good film that ties in with the previous films and leaves he door open for a sequel. If you are looking for a film to kick off your summer, this is it, bub.
