Pros:Covers blisters, open cuts, dries fast, and protects for 3 games.
Cons:Smells horrible and patches can get hard and brittle before your league is over.
The Bottom Line: If you are getting blisters or breaking the skin on your thumb (or even fingers) then this product will help fix the problem so you can heal.
It is amazing how many bowling accessories are out there on the market today for people that bow more often than just once in a “blue moon”. There are some that I still don’t even know what they are really used for and I have bowled competitive for over 15yrs. This is one of those accessories that if you don’t bowl a lot, would probably have never heard of. This product is mostly referred to as “New Skin” in the bowling world and that is exactly what it does. It adds a new layer of skin to your thumb (or finger tips) if you have any blisters or an open wound. It is designed to put a layer over the problem area so the ball does not rub against it and cause it to open up more. However, there are some definite up’s and downs when using this product.

I don’t know what exactly is in this product I just know what it does. It is a sticky liquid that is applied with a small brush (that is on the cap) that you spread around the trouble area. You first apply a small patch over the area, which comes with each box you purchase, and then spread the “new skin” over the patch and around the edges. It hardens within a minute (even faster if you blow on it) and holds the patch in place while hardening to help protect your skin. This is designed so the thumb hole, or finger hole, will not rub the area and cause it to get worse or open up. It does actually dry rather smooth and really does not affect how the ball feels when you release. However, I have found that the patch itself does affect how the ball feels which I don’t like. Even though the patch is almost “paper thin”, it is still a thick enough that you may notice the ball feeling a little tighter as I do. So if you use bowling tape, and need to put a patch and “new skin” on your thumb, you may want to take out a piece of tape. I always keep at least one bottle of this in my bowling bag at all times to be safe but, I never use the patches myself. I throw them away the second I purchase a new box and just apply on my thumb without it. It works just fine by applying a good layer of any area and lasts the entire 3 games of league. If you are bowling more games than that, you may want to apply more every so often.
The first thing you will notice when you open the small bottle for the first time is the smell. It is just that bad and strong and would give me a headache if I were to smell it for any length of time (and maybe like glue get a contact high). Needless to say, it is potent stuff. You may want to apply this away from other people just to be nice. Also, even though I don’t use the patches myself, if you do have an open cut or blister, this will sting like hell for a few seconds until it dries. But, it will still help from keeping the wound from opening up any further without the patches if you choose to do that as I do. If I know I am bowling quite a few games in a tournament, I will apply this on the back of my thumb even without having any blisters or cuts. If you have sensitive skin, or bowling a lot of games at once, it will also help prevent any irritation or blisters forming while you’re bowling. Just remember, this can work on your thumb or your fingers.
Ways to prevent using this product:
If your blister, or open wound, is caused by the bowling ball itself, there are ways to stop that from happening. Usually if you get a blister forming on the back of your thumb then your thumb hole is not drilled correctly for you. The “pitch” may be off making you release the ball incorrectly or you may be a bowler that closes their thumb as they release the ball causing more skin friction with each throw. If this is happening, try getting your thumb hole re-drilled or if you are one that closes their thumb, try and learn not too. Closing your thumb will make you not release the ball the same consistently and is usually the cause of blisters forming from bowling. The same goes for your fingers if you have skin irritation while bowling.
The product itself does do exactly what it is intended to do. Stop irritations on your thumb or fingers from getting worse. Or even if you have sensitive skin and using this with no previous problems it will help prevent any from forming. When comes down to using the patches that it comes with, that is of course is up to you. Most people do use the patches that I see if they are using this. I just don’t see the benefit of altering the feeling of my bowling at all and just use the “new skin” as is. I would recommend this product to any bowler that has blisters or irritations on their thumb or fingers before they start bowling. Again, it only takes a minute to dry and the smell (although hirable) doesn’t last that long. Just try and fix any of these problems if they are caused by your bowling ball itself so you don’t always have to rely on this.
