tommy_lop's Full Review: DragonBall Z Burst Limit Game Dragon Ball for Xbox...
I got DBZ burst limit a couple of months ago when I found it on sale for 20 dollars. I notice that it was developed by the company that did the original Budokai series for the PS2 and I liked the budokai series I decided to try it out. DBZ burst limit is a lot like the original Budokai both good and bad.
Story The weakest part of DBZ burst limit is that the story mode only covers 3 sagas from the DBZ series. Sayian, Cell, and Frieza with no addional extra sagas from the other 2 series. That is quite a bit missing compare to more recent Dragonball games. There is some extra content dealing with Bardock and Barley but a good amount of the cast is missing.
Graphics. The graphics are what I expected from a dragon ball z game for the 360. High definition cel shaded graphics that match the characters and the look of the show perfectly. The arenas look like the standard DBZ arenas to battling either on islands, mountains, or on the alien world of Namek.
Sound. With the exception of a few characters the cast that did the English dub for DBZ has returned to do there parts in the game. There is also an option to listen to the Japanese sub track.
Gameplay Ok the games main mode is the Z chronicles which is the story mode, like all DBZ games the mode is broken up into sagas (in which case there is only 3). You pick a fight that happens between 2 characters in the anime and play has the one picked for you during that chapter, if you win you move on. There are story snippets at the beginning and end of every fight. While not has chatty has the original budokai these snippets can get to be fairly long.
Anybody who plays Budokai 3 will realize a lot of that game went into this one. The ability to fatigue your opponent, being able to teleport and juggle, and the ability to chase your opponent. These moves are all from Budokai 3. What’s new is the way special techniques and powers are done. Rather then having to charge your ki meter it fills up automatically for you over a period of time. Doing special moves won’t drain your ki gage but will require that you have a certain amount of it filled. Once full there are several things you can do with it. You can transform (if applicable for the character), go into aura spark mode in which your ki blasts and special moves are more powerful, or you can go into a ki gage draining ultimate attack that will cause massive damage.
The way you to special moves is easy enough It’s press the control stick one direction while holding down B to release. Up B for the ultimate move. The chases, Aura moves, and transformations can all be done with the top bumper buttons. And there is an easy to learn from tutorial for all the moves.
To add in one more thing to the mix each character have drama pieces to unlock. These things go off during battle at random time and add in a little scene of dialogue. They can cause different effects, like damaging your opponent, rising your ki, or rising your attack while lowering your defense.
These drama pieces are were the character customizing comes in. Not quite has good has the capsule set up of the budokai series before each fight on xbox live or the other modes your allow to choose from 3 ultimate attacks and several of these drama pieces to take with you into battle. This is a nice touch but I liked the capsule set up better has a lot of these drama pieces activate randomly and the dialogue interrupts the flow of the battle.
Outside of the main mode there is also a survival and time attack has well has a tutorial mode. There are achievements to be earn in each of the modes so there worth checking out.
Xbox live and achievements. The achievements for the game seem well stack, there are achievements for unlocking characters, unlocking drama pieces, and completing story sections on normal with the top Z rank. For battling online there are no achievements for winning a certain amount of victory just playing a set amount of ranked games.
The xbox live battles are good but they can lag a bit at times interrupting the game. I have seen better (street fighter 4) and I have seen a hell of a lot worse (DBZ Budokai tenkaichi 3 for the wii). There are options to customize the game to how many rounds, the time, and if you want to put up with the drama pieces interrupting you.
Final Recommendation. DBZ burst limit isn’t a bad DBZ game in fact it’s pretty good and it is probably the best your going to get if you want to have a DBZ game that you can play online right now. It’s just that I would rather have them port DBZ Budokai 3 to the 360 and give it online play.
