I first got toenail fungus 24 years ago when I was in high school. I had gone on a two week canoe trip and my constantly wet feet developed athlete's foot and toenail fungus on my big toes. I went to a podiatrist and at the time, there was nothing available to cure the fungus. He prescribed a topical medicine I could apply to help make the nails look better but it never really worked and I didn't keep up with doing it twice a day.
Ten years later, my primary care physician prescribed oral Lamasil to clear the nails up. By then, all of my nails had the fungus. The Lamisil cleared up the three middle toes, but not my big toes or little toes.
Shortly after that I got married and didn't want to try Lamisil again as I wanted to get pregnant. I did visit a podiatrist several times to get the nails ground as the nails on my toes got very thick and would cause foot pain. The podiatrist told me her mother had tried the Vicks VapoRub home remedy and thought her nails looked better. She said I could try it, but she didn't think it would actually cure the fungus. She also recommended not wearing nail polish on my toes as it made the fungus worse.
After my children were born, I decided to give Lamasil another try. My primary care physician wouldn't prescribe it because of the complications it can cause to your liver.
I tried Vicks VapoRub for a while. It made my nails look more transparent but the were still thick. I also tried Tea Tree Oil but the smell of that was too much for me (and my husband who kept wondering what smelled so bad). I didn't keep up with either remedy for an extended time.
I thought I would be stuck with my yucky toenails forever. Two years ago, I saw NonyX Nail Gel on Drugstore.com and decided to give it a try. NonyX is supposed to be applied morning and night to the effected nails. It doesn't cure the fungus, but clears up the keratin debris buildup under the nail. This results in clear, "normal" looking nails. The gel won't penetrate through nail polish, so if you polish your toenails and you're embarrassed to be seen without polish, you may want to start treatment when you won't be wearing sandals or open-toe shoes.
I started out just using NonyX in the morning after I showered. I didn't want to use it before bed as I didn't want any complaints about my smelly feet. The smell isn't great, but I don't think it's as bad as the Tea Tree Oil was. I am pretty good about using it every day but occasionally I forget. Usually I put it on after my shower and then walk around barefoot until the gel dries. I only do it once a day. I went from having 10 yucky nails two years ago to only four yucky nails today. One of my big toes is completely clear and the other one is clear on the bottom with just a small thick part on the top. It's taken a long time, but I haven't used the product twice a day as recommended and have missed days and weeks along the way. I've even purchased sandals that show my toes -- something I hadn't done for years!!!
If you have thick, yellow, toenails, give NonyX a try.
