Xerox DocuPrint P1202
The Verdict is Still Pending
A few months ago as I was vacationing in a remote area of South East Asia, I received a phone call from my son in in New York. He had been looking for a good printer and he wanted to ask me what I knew of a Xerox printer model DocuPrint P1202.
A day earlier, by coincidence an old army body who also likes to vacation down in the Bondok, had brought a computer magazine from Spain. Since I do not have as many chances to speak Spanish as I would like, I always enjoy the opportunity to read anything I can get my hands in Spanish.
It is about 9:30 in the morning; I am sitting on a bamboo long chair by the ocean and enjoying my first beer of the day. I am a bit distracted by the sound of the waves breaking on this beautiful white sandy beach, but I still try to concentrate on the articles written in the magazine.
By the time I had finished my first the beer and was working on my second, an article about Xerox caught my eyes. The title went something like this. Cuando los Grandes Callen. Translated When Giants Fall. I read this article several times over; it was talking about the financial problems of Xerox.
So when I received the call from my son, the story was still fresh in my mind. The deal sounded very good he said that about a month ago the Xerox DocuPrint P1202 printer was selling for $1,450.00 Canadian ($1,000.00 US) and that he could buy one for $415.00. I told him about the article I had read the day before, he said that he also herd about it but, according to the store where the printer is for sale, there should be no problem getting supplies and service if something happens to the giant
Well here we are almost 10 months later; the machine is installed in our Internet cafe in Saint Lambert is running well.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Although not considered a commercial machine, the Xerox printer model DocuPrint P1202 is a large machine and it is also priced as if it was a printer aimed for the business world. The dimensions of the printer are 36 inches by 421/2 by 22 inches and it weights about 20 pounds.
The controls buttons are located on the top right end side of the printer and the paper is fed from a tray that can hold as many as 250 sheets. I like the oversize tray, when running a big job you do not have sit by the machine to wait until it is time to refill the tray with paper.
Another good feature is that the printer can be installed with either parallel or USB ports.
The ink cartridge life is also a favorable point, with an estimate of 6,000 pages printed per cartridge. If there is something I dislike is a printer that is always in need of a cartridge replacement. I own one like this; it is a Brother MFC 7,000. After a few months I put it back in its box and have not used it since. I wrote a review on the Brother MFC 7000, titled Jack of All Trade, Master of None. I rarely stay away from not recommending a product, I usually prefer to recommend under certain condition, but for the Brother MFC 7000, it is a different story.
FEATURES
The Xerox DocuPrint P1202 is somewhat limited in the features it offers. More so if you consider the higher price.
The features it does have are:
- A true 600 dpi resolution, that can be enhanced by software to 1,200 dpi.
- A rated print speed of 12 pages per minutes.
- It will accept all types of paper, even card stock.
- A large quantity of paper can be loaded up in the tray, up to 250 sheets.
- It is a fairly quiet printer to run.
- Uses parallel and USB interfaces.
OPTIONAL ITEMS
- An optional network card is available. I am not certain of the price for that option; if I find out I will add the information in the review.
- Also offered in in option is a PostScript. PS SIMM.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
When it comes to performing basic tasks, this is an excellent printer. Both the presentation and the draft text modes are superior. The photographic reproduction is also excellent.
I like the way the tray is easily conform from letter to legal size paper and that it will accept card stock.
I guess my only complaint is that for a printer that is that expensive you would expect more features and more versatility.
Now the question remains about the future of Xerox ever since I read that article I have not heard anything else about it.
