I have been playing Yahtzee as long as I can remember. The first time I played was with my dad and lets just say since then I have learned some new strategies to beat him once I go home next month to visit with them. YES! ;-)
Yahtzee is a fun and entertaining dice game. The game comes with 5 dice, score pads, and a red cup to shake and mix the dice in. No writing utensils are included. I just keep at least 4 old pens in the box so they are always there when we want to play. Milton Bradley is the manufacturer of the game.
The object of the game is to get the highest score and beat the other players. How do you play? Easy....You roll the dice and try to make combinations of dice to add up and fill in spots on your score sheet. There are many combinations that you have to choose from, some you can use in more than one spot so you have to choose a strategy to use. For example if you roll three #4 dice, then you roll again and get nothing more than a #1 and a #2. You can use that on the top of the score sheet for your three #4s or you can use it on a three of a kind. My choice, wait for higher rolling dice instead of the extra #1 and #2 to use on a three of a kind.
As you start to play you have chances to shake, rattle, and roll your dice. You can keep dice out that you chose not to reshake to try to make your combination.
What combinations do you have to come up with. On the upper section of the score sheet you have the dice 1-6. You try to roll as many of those numbers as you can of one of a kind. Don't forget if you roll 5 of any one dice, for example five #4 to take it as a Yahtzee. If you get a total of 63 on the upper section then you get a bonus of 35 points. On the lower section it is a little more challenging. You have to find 3 of a kind, 4 of a kind, full house, small straight, large straight, Yahtzee, and a chance. A chance is when you use dice that you can not use in any of your other spots. You only have one chance so be careful. FYI, for every extra Yahtzee you roll, you get extra bonus points, 100 to be exact. I have had some luck with this, but it does not happen often.
Yahtzee is a fun game to play. We play it when we have friends over or on a rainy day. My soon to be 9 year old daughter enjoys this game. I really believe it helps to build her adding skills and other strategies such as learning what a full house is, etc.
I don't cheat, however; if you play with my darling husband have a calculator handy, he swears he can count and I love him dearly but recently I was going through some old score cards and seen a lot of miscalculations. Hmmmmm.... Get my drift?
When the score pads run out as they did in our situation you can order straight from Milton Bradley or you can search stores for them. It took me months to find the score pads. I paid $2.99 for extra score pads and I found them at our new Target.
Have fun, play the game. It is fun, entertaining, and yes, in my opinion helps to build simple addition skills for children. The game is inexpensive, I paid $7.00 for mine and I believe since it has been years since I have purchased it, that I did purchase it from Wal Mart. Have fun!
