When I got my F310 about 3 years ago I had been playing my brothers acoustic over the previous summer, just enough to get hooked. So it was mostly luck that I ended up with such a great guitar for a beginner.
When I ventured cautiously into the music store I had a choice between this and a similarly priced Fender. I chose the Yamaha because the action (distance between the strings and the fretboard) was lower, which makes it easier to play, and because the sound sounded fuller.
I was teaching myself mostly to start with but have been having lessons from a really great teacher for 6 months and having heard how much better this guitar sounds when he plays I believe I've got quite a bit of mileage left in it. A few of my friends who are much better players and own guitars costing several times the price of the F310 have been impressed as well when they considered how much it costs.
I tend to use medium gauge strings which seem to suit the guitar very well but would certainly suggest using lights if you're just starting out as this will make playing bar chords a little easier.
Mine has been knocked around a little, especially over the last year as I tend to leave it out so I can pick it up at any opportunity. This hasn't affected it all and it seems to hold its tuning really well. It might have developed one dead fret which does sound a little muffled but this doesn't stand out in general use.
All that said, the feel and sound of a guitar is a very personal thing and whilst I usually buy accessories (strings, plectrums etc.) through the web I would go and try out a few guitars in a shop before choosing - and if possible bring a knowledgeable friend or teacher along who will be able to spot any possible problems with the particular instance of the guitar you're getting.
