| mp3jockey's Full Review: Yamaha RX-V630 6.1 Channels Receiver |
For Under $800, its a Steal!
This is one of the most Feature Rich Home Theatre receivers available! I have auditioned more than 10 in the RX-V630's price range, but NONE of them had the mix of features it has. Let me start by saying I have owned the RX-V630 for over a year now. I was in a quandry trying to find a Home Theatre Receiver that had the mix of Inputs and Outputs I required, was built solidly, and was sonically acceptable. Sure..I found several HT (Home Theatre) receivers that fit the bill quite nicely...for upwards of $1000! I came across this gem at a local HI FI superstore (NOT Best Buy), checked the back for the required connections. Hmm...looks okay so far. The price (at the time) was under my $500 upper limit. Now the acid test: sound quality. Powers my Bose more than adequately when listening to music...as well as two other sets of speakers at various locations in the house. AND, it allows your DOLBY DIGITAL encoded TV and DVD soundtracks to COME ALIVE with sonic nuance, for a truly Movie Theatre Experience in the comfort of your own lounge chair.
Well Constructed
Its heavy...about 25 pounds or so, most of that being the power transformer! The RX-V630 also sports 6 separate 75 watt Power Amps. Most receiver manufacturers opt to use power amps on a "card", reducing maunfacturing costs, but also sound quality. And, when listening to the soundtrack accompanying the DVD LORD OF THE RINGS, you WILL be able to tell the difference! The Speaker binding posts are another sign of good construction: they accept banana plugs, spade connectors, and a variety of speaker wire, including heavy gauge cable.
Outputs and Inputs up the wazoo
Sorry...but it DOES! It also has a Coaxial Digital Input, as well as being able to do Component Video Switching, which , alone, is worth the price of admission, especially considering many people now have more than one DVD player in their HT setup, or maybe one of the new Panasonic DVD recorders (see my review on the HS2), or maybe you have a High Definition Cable Box that uses Component Video Outs. The RX-V630 has 2 sets of Component Video Inputs, in addition to 4 optical (Toslink) inputs, as well as 5 Video Inputs, and 2 Video Outputs, all with S-Video connections, as well as RCA (Composite)jacks. The RX-V630's rear panel has input jacks to accommodate an external 6-channel decoder making the receiver ready for any other 5.1 channel format.
...and thats NOT ALL
Yamaha's decoding circuitry incorporated into the RX-V630 performs Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby ProLogic II, DTS, and DTS "ES-Compatible" decoding. Yamaha's Quad-Field CINEMA DSP adds an additional rear center soundfield, allowing enjoyment of 6.1 channel movie sound formats. The RX-V630 provides 21 surround programs and offers a total of 41 surround environment variations. Personally, I don't take advantage of DSP features while listening to my CD's, but when watching DVD's...WOW! It gives you options to make any living room sound its best.
40 FM Pretunes
Its a RECEIVER, and it does a very good job of pulling in FM-Stereo stations. Up to 40 preset AM and FM stations can be grouped in five groups eight stations. These groupings make it easy to access favorite stations or to have musical genres, such as all the jazz stations, grouped together.
Whats NOT to like?
I haven't found anything yet, but I'll keep you posted!
For your "Under $1000 Home Theatre System"
The Yamaha RX-V630 should be your choice for the receiver for your Home Theatre setup...and at today's prices, you'll be able to spend more on your 5.1 speakers to go along with this excellent Yamaha product! After setting up your HT, sit back and enjoy your favorite DVDs, as if for the first time!
