Pros: Great Preset Sounds
Cons: Editing is Poor
Down in the yamaha jungle of synthesizers lies a range of animals (SYNTHS) that are very different. Some like to growl beastly with fantastic sound, others like to change colour and shape lizard like with superb editing. Some are small and inexpensive, mass produced and others are special reserved for the almighty pieces of kit!
OK, enough already! This is a cheap entry level synth from Yamaha. It is modelled on the more expensive S30 at $800. At $400-450, it is around half the price of an S30, does this mean that you only get half the features?
NO, you get most of the features all bar the the hi-tech editing capability of the S30 range, meaning that this is more or less a good sounding keyboard!
SO how does it sound? Well it uses the same high quality AWM wavew engine that the S30,80,90 and Motif uses, so you know how its gonna sound. It has around 700 presets that filter every genre of music. Yolu have your sharp rhodes pianos, bell like wurlitzers, grand pianos, basses, slapped, popped, picked, guitars - wah-wah, funk, clean, jazz etc... and there are hundreds of preset synth sounds that can be edited a little.
When I say a little, I mean you can add reverb, chorus, wah, join two sounds togetehr etc...you cannot morph sounds as on a MOTIF or an analogue emulation synth.
There is MIDI connections, so plugging to a sequencer is easy and worthwhile. There is a USB port for easy connection to computer sequencers such as CUBASE, so you will be making music in no time.
For the composer or wannabe popstar who wants instant high quality sounds, to produce CD quality music, this will provide just that. For those who like to edit and create new and unique sounds, who like to build complex synthetic patterns, then this is not the job.
Choose with Care!
I retail this at $449. You could probably buy it online for around $400.
