Pros: DVD + Tuner + speakers, connects to and plays everything.
Cons: Bigger than other similar units.
The Bottom Line: If you need a "B" set of speakers and like a separate 5-DVD player, this is it. I like it.

| jabba2000's Full Review: Yamaha YHT-760 Theater System |
I needed to replace a dead DVD player so I decided it is time to get the entire home theater package. I had the following requirements which drove me to this unit: 5-DVD changer, support for 2nd set of main speakers (which I have in another room). I like that the DVD player is separate from the Amp (so one can be replaced if it fails without the other), although that makes the unit large (as there are two components instead of one). Also, the subwoofer is powered from the Amp (many others have most of the amplifier components housed in the subwoofer box itself), thus it makes the Amp bigger than average. I like that the two front speakers are a decent size, not the tiny things that come with most units (perhaps that comes from my old fashioned thinking that a bigger speaker will sound better and can be louder). If you do not need a DVD player, look at the YHT-360, which is basically this same unit, minus the DVD player, and in black instead of silver. I like the fact that this is a 5.1 unit, I do not need or have room for any more speakers than that.
Note that only the basic composite video cable comes with this unit. Throw it away. Figure out how you want to connect your components and then buy Component video cables and digital audio cables. I connected the audio of my DVD, Set top box, cassette deck, and VCR all through this unit with no problems. I did not run the video thru this unit because I want others (spouse) to be able to watch TV or a DVD or videotape directly through the TV without forcing them to turn on the home theater. If we choose to listen thru the home theater then we just mute the TV, so we can have it both ways.
The sound of the unit is fine. Not "knock your socks off" but it's fine. Hey this isn't the top of the line model. Bass is a little muddy, treble is not overly sparkly, but it's fine.
DVD player had no trouble playing scratched library DVDs, DVD I burned myself on +R media, music CDs, and JPG CDs.
I have got to say that this unit goes overboard on all the different "sound programs" that are built in to it. It can make the audio sound like it's in an echoey concert hall, etc. I find it overkill but you don't have to use those features if you don't want - just pick one that you like and it'll remember the setting that you choose for each specific input.
I think some of the buttons on the Amp are unclear in meaning and tiny in size. Big buttons let you run through those sound programs, yet the buttons for using the radio presets are tiny.
There are lots of options that you can set. The only one I had to touch was to tell it that the "B" speakers were in a separate room rather than in the same room as the surrounds; that way it knows to pump the complete audio to them as a stereo pair rather than as just 2 of 6 speakers in the main room.
I am satisfied with this unit.
