If you ask your Japanese friends to pick up a couple of good Japanese beer, they will probably include Yebisu Beer on the list. Please let me introduce the background and the quality of Yebisu Beer to you, since I know Yebisu Beer is not very famous here in the US.
Company background
First of all, this beer is produced by a division of Sapporo Beer, which is world-famous. Due to some very strange corporation group policy in the last few decades, Yebisu Beer was not promoted strongly.I don't want to go to the details of this strange policy. But, in essence, Sapporo Beer wanted to promote the beer with their own name.
The origin of Yebisu Beer dates back to 1887 when Yebisu Beer build brewery in a small village in Tokyo. If you have been to Tokyo, you probably heard of the place named Ebisu between Ginza and Shibuya. Ebisu is the place they build the first micro brewery. Note that the town, Ebisu, was named after Yebisu Beer.
As you know, Japan economy experienced a lot of booms and trough. It is the same with Yebisu Beer's history. However, Sapporo Beer always treated Yebisu Beer brand as something special, and they successfully made many Japanese people have some special feelings on Yebisu Beer.
Quality of Yebisu Beer
It may sound a little strange to say Yebisu Beer is German taste beer. But Yebisu Beer is brewed in the old classic German way.
Several decades ago, Japan didn't have any strict laws on beer quality. So many beer company faked people with cheap so-called beer. Yebisu Beer was against this trend, and followed the strictly regulated brewing method in German.
Yebisu Beer tastes a little bitter among Japanese beers. It gives you very fresh and clear taste when you drink in, which is perfect when you want to refresh your tongue sensor in moving another dish. In this sense, Yebisu is a good companion with you in having Sushi, because you don't want to mix up all the Sushi tastes.
FYI
Do you know what Yebisu means in Japanese? Yebisu is one of the seven famous Asian gods. Yebisu is presumably very fat and has very big ears, which represent happiness and wealth. Different from other 6 gods who have origins outside Japan, Yebisu has its origin in Japan.
Well, let's go back to the story, and conclude my opinion.
Do I recommend Yebisu?
Yes.
I know it is very tough to find this beer in the US. But it is definitely worth giving it a shot. Nice information for you is that many Japanese people will think you have a good tastes on Japanese food. And, believe me, they will treat you a little bit nicer.
One demerit is its price. In Japan, Yebisu is priced about 20% higher. But in the US, the price difference is smaller.
