quietest performance tire available

Written: Feb 25 '02
  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Handling and Control:
Pros:Quiet, very responsive, smooth ride, and less expensive than other performance tires
Cons:not available in my front rim's size :(
The Bottom Line: Quiet, responsive, smooth ride, less expensive than other high performance tires but limited tire sizes are available.

Info on the tire I purchased:

Size: 255/45ZR18
Type of Tire: Ultra High Performance All Season

Mounted on:
Rim: 18" M-Parallel BMW Rim (rear)
Car: 1995 BMW 740IL

Competing tires:
Michelin Pilot Sport, Nitto 555, Bridgestone Potenza S03, lots of other lo pro tires.

The "db" in the model name of the tire stands for "decibal" because this tire is designed to truly be the quietest tire on the road. I had Pirelli P6000 tires which were ok but wore out quickly and were relatively noisy at higher speeds. At the speed I drive, these tires didn't last long :)

The first thing I noticed when I got these tires mounted is that I could barely hear the tires and my overall ride seemed to be much smoother. But when I got on the freeway, I noticed the more amazing thing about the tires: the responsiveness. I'd always read about how this tire is more responsive that the other and I really didn't understand what that meant. Now I know.

While I was driving on the freeway, I only slightly turned my wheel to change lanes and the next thing I knew, I was in the lane. I guess the best way to explain it is that it used to be if I wanted to make a turn, the car would sort of have a delayed response. So if I were telling the car "Turn!" the car was saying ". . . . alright" and it felt kind of sluggish. Needless to say, handling was affected as well. With these new Yokohamas, it's like when I say "Turn!" the car says "RIGHT AWAY!" without hesitation. Truly a great handler.

While I love this tire, the only con here is that it is not made for my front tire rims. My fronts require 235/50ZR18 and this tire is not made in that size. I only happened to have put this tire on the back because my fronts were brand new of a different brand (Michelin Pilot) and are a different size than the rears. So if you have a BMW 740IL Sport edition or have mounted the OEM M-parallels (not replicas), you're outta luck in mounting these for the fronts (as far mounting the exact dimensions required for the rim).
