There is one thing that I have stressed in dealing with my children was having a positive attitude and thinking. I had hoped that by teaching them this lesson would help them become satisfied with themselves and their life. After reading Dr. Wayne W. Dyer’s book YOUR ERRONEOUS ZONES I find I was doing the right thing. This book tells you how to escape negative thinking and take control of your life. If you have no control of your own life you are doomed to failure or you make life miserable for others in your family. This books gives step-by-step directions with examples on how to make those changes in your life.

Having someone explain in detail some mental disorder and thought patterns that you may be feeling may be un-nerving. Changing your mental make up will be a struggle but a necessary step that has to be made. Dr. Dyer explains this in his introduction in this manner; Being healthy is a mental state, and the means for achieving it are with the grasp of each one of us. I believe that a judicious mixture of hard work, clear thinking, humor and self-confidence are the ingredients of effective living. This book is written like a counseling session and each chapter includes as much self-help as possible. If you can see yourself with certain erroneous thoughts or self-destructive behavior you can use Dryer’s directions to change your life.
YOUR MIND BELONGS TO YOU – In this chapter you will find all things that clutter up our mind. Maybe you find it easy to blame others when something goes wrong, or do you live your life to please others. You may live in fear, that some tragedy may befall you or your family these worries are another time consuming failure to your mind. If you don’t take steps to rid your mind of these thoughts, your life will be one unhappy episode after another. Taking charge of your own mind does not take great intelligence, as a true barometer of intelligence is an effective, happy life living each day to fulfillment. An intelligent person will choose happiness over depression because they learn to take control of their mind with a new way of a thinking process. A person cannot control another person only their own way of thinking. Make your positive.
SELF-WORTH – This is where Dr. Dyer goes into our self-esteem, if you have a low value on your life you will have low-esteem. The author reminds us that to love ourselves is not having a high ego, but it is a learning step to clear our mind. If you are not happy with yourself, you mind will never reach that positive outlook. There are many examples in this chapter on how to overcome the feeling of low-esteem. He stresses that the only success for life is growth, so if you refuse to grow and expand the mind your life may be dismal. He emphasizes the need to take control of your thinking and you will feel so much better.
LOOKING FOR APPROVAL – When a person spend too much of their time looking for approval it will only lead to disappointment. If you do your work for your own approval and satisfaction then others will approve naturally. The erroneous zone is when you need the approval of others instead of pleasing yourself. This need for approval must go if you are to gain personal satisfaction. This whole approval thinking may go back as far as childhood seeking approval from our parents by the way we treat them. On page 65 I enjoyed the addition from Kahil Gibran from his book The Prophet (my personal favorite) “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you yet they belong not to you.” Dr. Dryer gives many examples of where we seek approval as it will require a great deal of practice to learn to please ourselves first.
BREAKING OLD HABITS – If you choose to change your thinking you have to break old self-defeating thoughts. You must not think of the ways it used to be but the way for new ideas. Breaking away from negative thought about your life, such as I’m shy, I’m a loser, I’m a afraid will only lead to self-distruction You are the sum product of your choices so don’t create excuses. Label yourself a positive thinker.
FOLLOWING CHAPTERS – Dr. Dyer covers many emotions that will interfere with your mental emotions. He covers guilt and worry, exploring the unknown, breaking barriers, justice trap, procrastination, declaring independence and farewell to anger. In each of these chapters you will find many examples and recommendation on how to improve your mental image of yourself. I cannot stress enough how this book will change your way of thinking about yourself. Giving you a map and steps that will help you clear your mind of negative thoughts. YOUR ERRONEOUS ZONES can help you take control of your feelings, find ways of true self-reliance. Dr. Dyer gives you all the tools you will need to live a happy and complete life. In his final chapter he gives a portrait of a person who has eliminated all these ERRONEOUS ZONES.. Check out this chapter to see how you measure up to being a positive thinker. Will you be one of these people if you make the right choices.
