Pros: a mostly non-violent show for both kids and teens alike
Cons: fans of the card game will feel out of place with the altered rules.
The Bottom Line: Just give it one try. That's all I ask.

| LoneWOlf316's Full Review: Yu-Gi-Oh! |
I, like most other people, first heard of the show and wrote it off as nothing more than a horrid Pokemon rip-off (and trust me, one Pokemon-esque show is plenty). But, I noticed that they actually were trying to get a plot and a message across to the viewers.
Here's the show's premise:
Yugi Moto, along with his friends, have all gotten into the latest card game, Duel Monsters. Now, Seto Kaiba (owner of the Kaiba Corporation and inventer of the virtual Duel Monsters arena) has come to town looking for a challenge (oh, did I mention that Kaiba is the reigning DM champ), and Yugi steps up to the challenge.
This leads into other episodes and DBZ like "sagas" (the only difference, you can watch these sagas without being bored to tears from hour after hour and not getting anywhere) which lead to a tournament held my Maximillion Pegasus (the creator of Duel Monsters), which Yugi must win (watch the show to find out why).
Helping Yugi through his duels (besides his friends) is a spirit hidden inside his Millenium Puzzle (a very rare and powerful "Millenium item" made centuries ago). The spirit (known as Yami Yugi) takes over Yugi's body and you can tell (more menacing look, a little taller, voice change, and pant-colored boots). This spirit, although very honorable, is also a little over competitive and a sore loser. I don't mind that, but it may be a little too "mentally damaging" to the tots.
Now, some parents may not want to let their kids watch it for fear of the violence screwing up their little tykes warped minds, but I can assure you, the violence here (what very little there is) is not nearly as bad as the bloodletting, brain pounding Powerpuff Girls (my review for that "show" was written a while back).
Voice work is great, with a few exceptions. You see, this show was produced for the states by 4Kids Entertainment (the individuals responsible for plagueing us with Pokemon), so a lot of the Pokemon voice actors are used here (I would almost swear that Team Rocket's James is Pegasus), and that might get to some anti-Pokemon folks out there (it hasn't gotten to me yet, but some people I know have already cracked).
The only true downside comes from my experience playing Duel Monsters (it was the game that got me to watch the show in the first place). In the real game, there is a ton more detail than that of the show. But, that is just to help keep the show going and not lull anyone to sleep with too much strategy (but there is still strategy shown, but not a lot).
Overall, loyal reader, if you are a fan of anime, and are looking for something not quite normal (like anything anime is normal), then you might want to give Yu-Gi-Oh! a shot. You just might like it. And non-anime fans should check it out too, the more the merrier.
Trust me on this one. You'll thank me later.
