| sponkit's Full Review: Yu Yu Hakusho |
There is a time that a lot of cartoons are considered as "for kids only" but when Japanese cartoons for the teens like Yuyu Hakusho hit the television. Watching a cartoon became a trend to watch not only for kids but to the teens as well.
Yuyu Hakusho, literally means Spirits Wander White Book, is a Japanese cartoon. The story is all about the adventures of Yusuke Urameshi. Yusuke is a simple high school student. He struggles a lot of school and family problems. When he met a car accident, which resulted his death, his adventure as a spirit detective begins. Botan told Yusuke that he could have a second chance to live again by protecting the egg. Another tragedy unfolds when Yusuke's house is burning. Keiko Yukimura, a childhood friend of Yusuke, tried to save Yusuke's body from the fire but she was trapped inside the burning house. Yusuke had to sacrifice the egg to save Keiko. Because of his unselfish sacrifice of the egg, Keiko was saved from the fire and Urameshi was a given a chance to live again.
Yusuke became a spirit detective with a 'rei gun' skill. His task is to protect the world from demons with bad intentions. There are three main characters that helped him with his quest: Kazuma Kuwabara, a schoolmate of Yusuke with a 'spirit sword' technique, Jaganshi Hiei, a stubborn fire demon with the power of third-eye, lightning-speed reflex and black dragon technique, and Dennis Kurama, a demon with rose whip technique and the power to control the plants.
WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT IT?
Fighting scenes: Yuyu Hakusho has a lot of fighting scenes. The characters get you into action with their missions, series of tournaments and adventures. The fight between Taguro and Yusuke is a breath-taking episode.
Good story: The story behind the characters could teach you the importance of love, loyalty and friendship. Yusuke always show his compassion for those people who needs help. In a lot of episodes, Yusuke and Kazuma always fight the demons to protect their love ones or to save somebody who is in danger. It is a good story because there are a lot of mysteries behind the characters that unfold in every episode.
Realistic: The situations in the story seem realistic in every character of the cartoon. Anyone could relate to the character of Yusuke as a typical teenager but a delinquent student. Anybody could emulate the character of Kurama as a diligent student and a loving son to his mother.
Wacky scenes: There a lot of funny scenes to tell but I remember the scene when Yusuke gave a practical joke to Kazuma when he showed a different rei gun and hit Kazuma on his behind.
Good soundtrack: I really love the opening theme song of Yuyu Hakusho. It has funky sounds.
WHAT ABOUT THE BAD STUFF?
Bloody scenes: Probably the bad thing in fighting scenes is it could be bloody scenes. When watching the cartoon, parental guidance is advised. It is because parents should advise their kids not to emulate the amazing stunts of the cartoon characters.
Lack of subtitles in theme song: I wish there should be a subtitle of the theme song. Translation of the lyrics from Japanese to English could be added to the subtitles.
THE VERDICT: WHAT KIND OF ANIME FAN ARE YOU?
If you want to watch a non-stop action in a Japanese cartoon, Yuyu Hakusho is the right cartoon for you. However, you need to watch the whole episodes so that you could understand the story of every cartoon character. I like Yuyu Hakusho because it has a wonderful and intriguing story. If you are a truly anime fan, certainly you did not want to miss watching Yuyu Hakusho.
