A Nice, Mellow Brew for an Afternoon "Lift," but Not a Morning Cafe
Written: Aug 05 '08 (Updated Sep 04 '08)
Pros:Nice, smooth flavor. Inexpensive. Culturally and environmentally-sound.
Cons:If you're not a "morning person," then this coffee might put you to sleep!.
The Bottom Line: If you rely on coffee to get you going in the morning, then stay away from this until you need an afternoon pick-me-up.
Introduction Yuban's Premium Original medium drip coffee has a very "nice," social flavor--it'll keep you going in the afternoon, but it's not recommended for a morning "open-up-your-eyes-and-LIVE!" java brew. I had my wife pick this out due to it's reasonable price (the usual Folger's was $3 more!), and my prior experience with it at my friend's motorcycle shop, where I'd become enamored with it. I suspect that he farely cranks up the "grinding" concentration, and I'm going to have to try that myself, because this stuff is fairly weak! Could you Tell Me a Little More about the Taste? It's weaker than your average diner coffee, and definitely lacks any rich-bodied flavor--it's "2 clicks" weaker than McDonald's Premium Roast blend (which I rather fancy). There is a smooth aftertaste, but those more accustomed to standard-fare will be left unimpressed and unfulfilled. So Just What Are You Comparing This To? That's a fair question. My usual brew is regular Folgers drip, sometimes supplemented (or complemented) by Sensseo's Sumatran, Paris, or any other flavor except Caramel Bistro (skip it!). I'll put any of those in my Sensseo pod coffee maker, or just the former in my Mr. Coffee programmable drip machine. Is There Anything Good About this Product? Well, the container's made from recycled materials, and the "mild" designation may stave off a heart attack, or social hyperactivity. It's also "Rainforest Alliance certified"--over 30% of the beans come from "Latin and South American farms" which recieve training to produce hardier beans, use more environmentally safer, "green" practices, receive better wages, and build stronger communities. The cannisters themselves are made from more than 50% recycled materials. What Else? The "Rainforest Alliance Certified" logo looks suspiciously similar to the Starbucks one--green and "green" (it consists of a presumably endangered tree frog; green, of course). I support environmentally-sound practices, and the preservation of Earth's natural habitats--as long as the "tree hugging" isn't taken to fanatical levels where common sense, practicality, and concern for fellow humans is thrown aside for the sake of what becomes an "unnatural" occupation. There is, in all likelihood, many more species that have come and gone, in our lifetimes, completely undiscovered, than have been actively protected, so some "common sense" approach needs to be adapted. So What's the Best Use of this Product? Ironically, this coffee is best used in waiting rooms of otherwise dull businesses, like auto shops (ironically enough), or as an afternoon pick-me-up, to give you a little boost while your car gets squared away, or whoever you're waiting for is "good to go." UPDATE!!! I just filled up one of those Ecoman (great product!) aftermarket Sensseo pods with this coffee and ran it through. Not surprisingly, it comes out quite a bit stronger, and "morning-do-able." I use a battery-operated milk frother to whip up 1/4 mug of milk and raw sugar, and then heat it for 27 seconds in the microwave, adding this to the Sensseo'd brew. I'm sipping some 30 minutes after the fact, and it's great for an evening draft. And those Ecoman refillable pods are a LOT more economical than buying regular pods, while giving you the option of designing your own pods.
