They're Just Like You...Only Dead. ZMD: ZOMBIES OF MASS DESTRUCTION
Written: Oct 24 '10 (Updated Dec 14 '10)
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction (2009) Directed by Kevin Hamedani
"Don't shoot me! I'm gay!" -Tom Hunt. Historically, this has not been a very successful defensive ploy.
The small town of Port Gamble rolls along like any other small community content with itself. The local mayor Hal E. Burton (James Mesher) is running for reelection. Frida Abbas (Janette Armand), the daughter of the town's only Muslim (Ali Hamedani) is avoiding the neighbors who's wimpy son is smitten with her. And Tom Hunt (Doug Fahl) is home with his boyfriend Lance (Cooper Hopkins) to come out to his mom. What a festive homecoming! You can tell that Tom would rather be having a root canal, but Lance is pushing him for their own good. What a nice, quiet town.
Enter the Zombies. At first, their shuffle is unremarked; people are very self absorbed. Mayor Hal E. Burton has just discovered that liberal teacher Cheryl Banks (Cornelia Moore) is running against him. He takes comfort with long time friend, Reverend Haggis (Bill Johns). Frida is cornered by the Miller family. If you want to know what they are like, listen to Jeff Foxworthy's comedy stylings. And Mamma Hunt (Linda Jensen) is so busy getting ready for Tom and his friend she doesn't even have time to be more than annoyed when one of her neighbors bites her at the market.
But Zombieism spreads like gossip, and soon the town is over run. And in the face of disaster, people's real nature shines forth. Joe Miller (Russell Hodgkinson) lets Frida into their basement, but is more worried about her Iraqi heritage than the fact his wife Judy (Victoria Drake) has been bitten. Tom and Lance, and Mrs. Banks take refuge in the church, which has been oblivious to all but Bingo. Sealed inside, the house of the lord becomes a powder keg as survival is first run through Biblical meaning. It is the Apocalypse, and all the sinners are being zombified! Kind of nervous for Tom and Lance. Worse, Mayor Hal E. Burton, upstanding pillar of moral rectitude, is beginning to look a little grey around the gills. But there is no worry; Reverend Haggis won't let them be thrown to the Zombies; no, they'll just convert them instead!
This Zom Com is decidedly tongue in cheek. Whose tongue that is, we haven't figured out yet. But it takes the carnage of a Zombie Movie, and uses it to shine a spot light at the narrow minded bigotry found in a small town. Who is more dangerous, the cannibalistic corpses, or your friends and neighbors?
A definite poke at the American response to 9/11, and the constant fear-mongering that has been kept stirring since then, this movie really sheds some light on the way America is living in this post 9/11 world, and the picture is not flattering. And while it mostly pokes fun at the conservative side of things, it doesn't spare anyone.
If this movie has a flaw, it is that it takes this premise and beats you over the head with it, much like what happens to the Reverend Haggis (not to be hateful, but that was one satisfying death scene.) But if you think this movie is just for the light laughs, think again. They could make George Romero loose his lunch with some of the scenes of carnage. Social commentary, gore and more, belly laughs, and gut munching, this little low budget gem delivers everything you could want from a Zom Com with the possible exception of Gratuitous Nudity. And that can be taken as a plus when choosing what the kids can watch for Halloween. Watch this with a pack of liberals and a six pack. It's a blast.
This, of course, is entered into my "Let There Be Lips!" Rocky Horror Write Off.
