| berniez40's Full Review: Z Series Hybrid Golf Club Full Set with Stand Bag |
Though these clubs are just a cheap knock off of Pings, they repesent a decent value for the money. That comes with the qualifying statement that you are just a beginner, and you haven't made up your mind whether or not you enjoy this silly game of Flog...er..uh..Golf. First off, the quality is competent, though nothing stellar. You get every club you need as a raw beginner, and they even throw in a decent quality bag. Here's a rough breakdown of what you get, and how they operate.
WOODS
The Driver, 3 Metal and 5 Metal are good enough to hack your way through your first season while you make up your mind. The quality is decent, though a better player will find the shafts a tad whippy, and the clubs themselves just barely long enough. Don't be led into believing "Titanium Matrix" is a real qualiy piece of metallurgy. It isn't. It's a very nice way of saying that the titanium is cut with quite a bit of aluminum. Basically these are not real disance monsters, nor are they going to hold up well past a good season or two of steady weekly play. But for the $150 price tag for the entire set---usually the cost of one good fairway metal alone (on sale no less)---these woods will get the novice/beginner off to a good start.
HYBRIDS
They are okay, as they will teach the beginner that the 3 and 4 Long Irons are hard to hit, and maybe a hybrid or fairway metal is a better choice. These, as with many bargain basement hybrids, posess quite a bit of offset in order to help the beginner avoid a nasty slice out of the gate. Better players will not appreciate the somewhat dead feel, the tendency towards a balloon shot, and the insta-hook tendencies of these things. Beginners will enjoy the disappearnace of their slice, the ease with which the ball becomes airborne, and at least the feel of some sort of decent impact with a long iron.
IRONS/WEDGES
The set comes with 5,6,7,8,9,irons as well as a Pitching Wedge and a Sand Wedge. These are actually the most decent clubs within the set. I wouldn't call them supremely balanced, nor would I say the feel is anywhere near forged. What I would say is that you get a decent set of competent irons with which to learn the game. I found the distances with my cousins set to be better than most knock-offs I've ever played, and the accuracy to be serviceable. The wedges will never end up in Mickelson's Bag, but they'll knock a Top Flite up onto a muni green for Joe Hacker.
PUTTER
The mallet putter is just that--a brand X-Mallet Putter. It does the job without any frills attached. Don't expect to find an Odyssey at 10 cents on the dollar, but it will run with any Tiger Shark, or other bargain brand. I think face balanced mallets are best for beginners anyway. It will perfornm the Pendulum stroke well, and it will get you by until you are good enough to decide whether or not you care to try and develop an Arc Putting Stroke.
