My youngest daughter has been going fishing with me since she was about two. She likes to see the fish, especially the larger Rainbow Trout and Salmon. When she was three and four she would laugh with excitement when I would hook a large fish and they would jump out of the river and try to flip the hook or lure out of their mouth. I decided that Samantha could start fishing when she was about five years old. There are several issues that you should consider when teaching children to fish at a young age.
First off you have to be extremely careful with a child around the water. My small one can swim like a fish so this made things a bit more comfortable with me. The child should also wear a life preserver. In any case, I always stay right by my daughter when we are fishing. She requires a lot of help. She is just seven years old. It takes a lot of patience to teach a young one to fish. Finally the nest issue that you have to keep in mind is the sharp hooks. Hooks can be a real bummer to get out and quit often require a trip to the emergency room to remove. My daughter has never been hooked because I help her and she knows how dangerous a fishing hook is.
I do not like the closed faced spincasting reels. They are harder to work on when the fishing line gets tangled, and it will. I have always liked the open reels with a flip bale for casting. These are a bit harder to learn how to use and especially hard for a young child. The best reel for a little one to learn on are these types of closed faced, push button reels. They are referred to as a spincast reel. All the angler has to do is push a large bottom with their thumb and as they cast the line, release the button. This is the easiest reel to fish with. This little pole comes in several themes; Mickey Mouse, Snoopy, Scooby Doo, The Little Mermaid and a few others. It also comes with a little Mickey Mouse casting plug. The Plug is tied to the end of the fishing line so the child can practice casting, outside. This is a very good way for a young one to learn how to cast.
Conclusion
The small fishing poles with their themes are fun for the kids. The price ranges from $15.00 to $25.00 and I think that they are worth it. My daughter likes her Mickey Mouse pole and she loves to go fishing. The pole is built fairly well. They will last a year, possibly two depending on how often you go fishing and how many times your child drops the fishing pole. The pole will takes some beating. If it breaks, it will more than likely be the thin plastic on the reel itself. The cover is easy to get off and fix the line when a tangle occurs.
The pole is designed for small hands and it does not weigh much. The kids also enjoy the graphics that are on the poles. Can they catch a fish with them? They certainly can catch a fish with these little poles. They can reel in a 12 inch trout, Bass or Perch using this pole. Remember to set the drag so the pole is not jerked from the kids hands. For the money it is a good deal and the kids like it. I give Zebco® Mickey Mouse Catch 'em Kit four of five stars. Take your kids fishing!
