Pros: Appearance, features, price
Cons: Price, defective DVD player
The Bottom Line: Consider other brands first; probably better to spend a bit more money. For the price it may be a good thing if the unit you get isn't defective.

| aahadley's Full Review: Zenith XBV243 DVD Player / VCR Combo |
I had been wanting for some time to buy a DVD/VCR combination for the TV in my room, but until recently the prices on the available units were more than I wanted to spend. When I saw this unit for $199.00 I thought I'd found the solution to my dilemma.
I was initially quite pleased with this unit...it seemed to have everything I needed, ran very quietly and was just the right size for the space I had available. However, my good feelings wold last less than 48 hours.
I soon realized that the copy feature, which allows a DVD to be copied to a VHS tape, would be largely useless as most commercially available DVDs are copy protected (should've known better already!)
The clincher happened the next morning, when a DVD that had played flawlessly the night before failed to play at all. At first there was no picture or sound, then very low sound and very garbled audio, followed by the appearance of digital pixels of various parts of the video track all mixed together. These effects occurred multiple times, with two different DVDs that had both played well the evening before. When I ran these same DVDs on my Panasonic DVD to see if something had happened to the discs, they both ran perfectly.
It appears that at least some units of this model have a flaw in the optics or perhaps the laser itself. I have now replaced the unit with a Sony ($60.00 additional) which has more features and has given me absolutely NO trouble whatsoever.
