oxfordmike's Full Review: Harold N. Cones Ph.D., John H. Bryant, Martin Blan...
Lt. Commander Eugene F. MacDonald, one of the founders of Zenith and for many years its President, would be a good subject for a biography. I don't know that his name is well enough known that a publisher would be interested (even though Powel Crosley, Jr. was largely unknown before I wrote his biography). But here's the next best thing to a biography of MacDonald: the story of Zenith Radio with lots of background on the Commander.
What was interesting about MacDonald? MacDonald was an adventurer, backing the Macmillan/Byrd polar expedition (and providing radio support) and participating in underwater archaeology in the Great Lakes. In addition to these interests, MacDonald was deeply interested in the possibility of mental telepathy and other parapsychological phenomena, and sponsored a national research program via radio broadcasts, in cooperation with Dr. J.B. Rhine.
Radio historians Harold N. Cones and John H. Bryant have taken on the telling of much of MacDonald's story in Zenith Radio: The Early Years: 1919-1935. If you are at all interested in old radio, you'll want to add this book to your library. It belongs alongside biographies of Edward S. Rogers, Powel Crosley, Jr. and other inventors who were also pioneering marketers. Recommended also for those who want to explore the cultural aspects of the 'Teens and Twenties in America!
