| mind-full's Full Review: Zircon StudSensor Pro SL |
The manliest gadget around our house most certainly is the Zircon StudSensor Pro SL and I'll tell you why ... it works, even when the Manly Man of the House does not ... a rare occasion, I assure you (he could be reading this, you know ...).
While a stud sensor may not appear as manly as tapping walls with a hammer to "listen" for the presence of a stud, it sure beats the appearance of dents, divots and out and out holes in the wall from those near-miss attempts. A man hammering a nail into an accurately located stud is far more manly than a man with a spackle knife trying to cover his guesses.
Accuracy is a manly thing. Men and women are forever trying to be right and have arguments that stem from that effort. Why allow a shadow of a doubt when the Zircon StudSensor Pro SL will shed light to show the way?
Leaves No Stud Left Undetected
The Zircon StudSensor Pro SL works simply and easily, as long as you have working batteries in it. It's shape is similar to an ice scraper for your car windshield, but smaller and actually more lightweight. It's a not very manly goldenrod color, but that makes it easy to find in a tool box or other storage area -- not important for the male user, maybe, but a real attractor for us girls, of course, for all our stud-sensing needs.
Amazingly, the Zircon StudSensor Pro SL comes with batteries and the originals have not died in the four or five years we've owned this little gem (girl talk for "manly gadget").
For those of you who need to hear it from the source, these are the instructions as printed on the Zircon StudSensor Pro SL:
Stud Scan Mode: Place unit flat against wall. Hold in ON/Off button and slide horizontally across surface without lifting or tilting. When LEDs light, slow down and keep sliding until SpotLite is lit and beep sounds. This is the stud edge. Mark this spot. Keep moving past mark until lights go out. Continue holding button and reverse direction. Mark other stud edge. Center of stud is between two marks.
Deep Scan Mode: Use for materials to 1-1/2" thick. With unit flat against wall, double-click ON/OFF button and hold until DeepScan LED lights. Follow above directions.
If you don't move along smoothly or lose pressure on the Zircon StudSensor Pro SL it'll beep at you in a way that lets you know you've erred. Husband of Mine finds this helpful. Funny how I can offer similar information and he terms it "nagging".
If These Walls Could Talk
In the many instances Husband has used the Zircon StudSensor Pro SL, he's found it indispensable, from our 75-year old plaster walls and ceilings to our 150-year old drywall over plaster surfaces.
It's little, yellow and different from our old stud sensor, in that it's accurate and doesn't offer more bells and whistles than we need. It does, however, have a handy belt clip on the handle, something that actually does come into use from time to time. Is this a girlie thing? I think not.
When working in corners or behind large pieces of furniture to place outlets alongside studs the LED features have proved their worth more than once -- especially the red LED that glows on the wall at the point of the stud edge. Rather than peering at the device to see the little indented center point, the LED shows the point to mark without the hazard of a guess.
Never a Stud Around When You Need One?
The Zircon StudSensor Pro SL clearly serves a purpose in our household, yet is a fully-functional entertainment mechanism. BONUS!
Entertainment? You bet. Look past the little flashing lights and beeps that might entertain the small fry for a few minutes and look deeper ... and think "stud sensor". Being that we're talking gear for manly men, the term "stud" takes on new meaning now, doesn't it?
And, Husband of Mine doesn't miss a chance to test the Zircon StudSensor Pro SL at any given opportunity and then some ... and he tests it on himself.
Place the Zircon StudSensor Pro SL on the sternum of the man in question and press the button. Instant lights and beeps. There is a stud in the house, and he is it, in case there was any question.
At our house, this has been going on for years. Proof to me that if you bring a Zircon StudSensor Pro SL into the house it will surely detect the presence of a stud with complete accuracy ... as far as a 1-1/2" depth gets you, at least.
That's to the bone, isn't it, Honey?
