Pros: works effectively on my dog and cat, easy to use and apply
Cons: Slight smell if not diluted properly, some animals may have adverse reactions
You wouldnt believe what I woke up to the other day, FLEAS! My fiance had noticed that my dog was bleeding from his face and on his throat so we went to investigate the matter. Well we found a bug on him and it was a FLEA! How do I know this? Well the last job I had before becoming disabled I was an administrative assistant manager for a pest control company. This job required me to get certified as a pest control technician as well. So when my fiance asked me how did I know this, I looked at him rolling my eyes and reminded him that at one point in our lives I actually had a job and it was indeed a FLEA!
Just so you know for future reference, Fleas are either brown to dark brown colored and are very small. Almost the size of the top of a pin and they are very difficult to spot on a dog. The Female Fleas are .08 and the Male Fleas are slightly smaller. In order to produce more eggs, Adult fleas must feed on blood which happens to be the blood of household pets. Fleas are known to also bite on humans around their ankle area as well. Basically, fleas can overwhelm you and your household if you do not take action the moment one is seen.
So when I saw that my dog had even just one flea on him so far that I could find, I sprang into action. First I called my mother, who has four dogs who have been formerly treated for fleas in the past and she brought over the good stuff to attack the situation at hand! The good stuff was a bottle of liquid called Zodiac FleaTrol Flea and Tick Sponge-On for Dogs and Cats. My mother had said it had worked wonders in the past for her and it would be great for my dog, Casey. I was ready to go to work.
Zodiac FleaTrol Flea and Tick Sponge-On for Dogs and Cats is in a concentrated liquid form that is alcohol free and will not dry out the skin of your pet. What it does do is kill fleas, ticks, lice and ear mites on the spot and further prevents infestation from occurring by killing the eggs as well. The Zodiac FleaTrol Flea and Tick Sponge-On for Dogs and Cats can also be used with the Zodiac Flea and Tick Collars that they offer as well.
Zodiac believes in three step system in attacking fleas and other insects like ticks on your pet. Step #1 is to Treat Your Pet through shampoos or sponge-on treatments and other formulas that Zodiac offers. Step #2 is doing Maintenance after the treatment has been done like continuing with a Flea and Tick Collar. Lastly Step #3 is to Treat Your Home and keep the ticks and fleas from spreading onto your furniture, carpets, and other areas in your home. I decided that this is exactly the formula that I would follow step-by-step.
The Zodiac FleaTrol Flea and Tick Sponge-On for Dogs and Cats is a hazardous substance if not used properly. The Directions for Use are as follows:
It is a violation of Federal Law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling. For control of fleas and ticks and lice on dogs and cats, dilute 4 oz of concentrate with 1 gallon of water. Sponge on animal making sure hair is thoroughly wet to the skin. For control of ear mites, lightly sponge inside ears. Do not rinse. Towel dry. Repeat application weekly, if necessary. (taken from packaging)
So I did exactly what the directions said to do. My fiance picked up Casey and put him in our bathtub and I went sponging away. It was quite simple to do really and once the concentration formula was diluted, the smell was fine. In the concentration itself when you open the bottle, it would remind you of the smell of paint thinner. Once diluted it is barely noticeable really. And finally once towel dried you wouldnt even know you treated your pet. It was that simple. Didnt have to rinse and shampoo which Casey doesnt take to kindly and I have a feeling I would have been chasing him around my apartment for that one. It only took about 5 minutes to put on and a few minutes to towel dry him off. Then I was off to treat the rest of the house.
The Zodiac FleaTrol Flea and Tick Sponge-On for Dogs and Cats was a wonderful product for my situation. I have a three-legged dog that has enough problems standing in a bathtub as it is and this was the perfect answer. The sponge on treatment was simple and took to him well. I havent seen him scratch within the past 48 hours and I have been watching him closely. I did wrap up the sponge in a Ziploc bag and dispose of it into the trash and recommend the same, rather than keeping it around. It is much safer that way.
You have to be careful as far as storage and disposal as well. You must keep this bottle out of reach of children for one. That is the most important. As far as storing the bottle, it must be kept in a cool place rather than on top of your dryer. When you are ready to dispose of the bottle, you should rinse it out once and then wrap in paper of some sort and put in trash.
The active ingredients are:
Pyrethrins = 0.30%
Piperonyl Butoxide Technical = 3.00%
Other Ingedients = 96.70%
There are not just hazards to you as a person should you have contact through your mouth or in the eye, but also for your pets as well. You cannot use this formula on pets that are under 12 weeks. If your pet is nursing, aged or has conditions that are treated, alert your veterinarian before you use it. Sometimes a pet may have an adverse reaction to the pesticides that are in the concentrated formula and if this is the case, just wash the pet off with mild soap.
Otherwise, the product is good to go. I was rather pleased with Zodiac FleaTrol Flea and Tick Sponge-On for Dogs and Cats. I believe that it worked effectively for my dog and cat. I had to use another formula for my kittens. It was simple and less irritating than washing them which I have had to try in the past and it isnt fun.
