three_ster's Full Review: Zodiac Fleatrol(Tm) Foggers
When it comes to pets, one of the most annoying things about owning them, is the potential that fleas may come along. Such was the case to me recently, when I discovered that my two kittens were suffering from flea bites. Now I should explain that I live in a very cold area during the Winter, and both of my cats are indoor. That being said, I am under the assumption that the fleas came from a neighbor who must have gone someplace warm on a vacation with their pet. Unfortunately, some of those bugs decided to take up residence at my house, and I knew that I was going to have to do something about it.
Having dealt with fleas before, I was tired of processes, and was willing to spend a little bit more in order to get rid of them for a long period of time. I didn't want just a 1 month fix, or a treatment that I would have to use repeatedly, so I decided that I was going to go with a "flea bomb" for the first time. Now it really isn't a bomb, but rather a spray can that extinguishes itself in an enclosed area. The product that I went with was The Zodiac FleaTrol Fogger. It comes in a 3-pack, and is slightly expensive at $19.79 for the package that I paid for. But, I was willing to pay a little more to ensure the comfort of my animals, and for myself.
The intent of the fogger, is to kill fleas & ticks, and the eggs that they may have left behind anywhere in my apartment. It is designed to treat up to 2,250 sq. ft., and it doesn't leave a lingering odor after it has been used. Having a large apartment, I knew I would end up using more than one can, but I was also a little weary of exactly what I would have to go through to get it done. In the package we get 3 cans of the spray, so I had to figure out exactly what the best places in the place to have the "bomb" go off would be. Settling on a backroom (the room where the cats sleep the most, and are put when they act up), my bedroom (where the cats usually end up anyways), and the living room, I went to work.
To use the spray, we are first told to vacuum the place thoroughly before beginning the fogging. This is to insure that any eggs trapped in the carpeting will be pulled up, and be available to the fog. Also it is important to remove all pets, people, and food substances from the area that is going to be fogged. Breathing in the fumes is not an option, so people should be ready to vacate any area that is about to be treated. Also, they consider the product to be flammable, so it is important to turn off any appliances that may be in the fogging area. I took the extra step of unplugging everything before I set mine off. The fogger has to be elevated so that it sprays a vast area, so I used an end table with a pizza box on top of it, as to not ruin the top of the table. The directions say to keep the treated area closed off for 2 hours, and then ventilate that area for an additional hour post-fog.
The canisters are basically like hair-spray, with a latch on the top that keeps the spray constant. When you are ready to set it off, you press the nozzle down, and run as fast as you can the other way. It is very dangerous to have the spray contact your skin, and even worse if it is ingested into your system. To deal with instances that may occur, they list many precautions on the box that you should take just in case. Some important things to note are that it is a water-based, low-odor, non-sticky formula. It also contains no ozone-depleting substances and it won't stain floors, carpets or upholstered furniture.
Recommendation
The Zodiac Fogger was very easy to use for me. It wasn't as big of a hassle as I had expected, and it actually got me to clean up my apartment a little before I set off the spray. Thus far it has worked very well, and I have not seen a flea since I set off the spray. This was very good news to me, because after paying so much for it, I really did expect it to give me some great results. It is a product that I would recommend to anyone who has had problems with pests like fleas and ticks. The box says that the fog will last up to 7 months once it is activated, but I am secretly hoping that the fleas get the message and don't come back. Post use, I found that the $19.79 was well worth the removal of my pest problem.
