lizardes's Full Review: Zojirushi NS-TGC10 5.5-Cup Rice Cooker
For a small household, the Zojirushi 5.5-Cup Rice Cooker is the answer to convenient, tasty, healthy and inexpensive dishes that can stay fresh for hours in an appliance the size of a toaster.
Even my teen-age son can make perfect rice and he is no whiz in the kitchen. I've used flavored rice packets, brown rice, white rice and sushi rice. All come out nearly perfect every time. Additionally, rice stays fresh and hot all day. I can cook a pot of rice for lunch and eat the leftovers that night at dinner with no sacrifice in taste. The unit takes about as much space as a gallon of milk, perfect for small kitchens.
I thought I'd never buy a rice cooker since I was always able to cook perfectly good rice in a pot on the stove. However, since I've tried it, I've decided that the convenience is worth the price of the cooker. No more watching for a pot to boil, setting a timer or adjusting the heat of the burner.
Simply use the provided measuring cup of rice, fill with water to the appropriate line, and press the key to start cooking. The cooker will let you know when the rice is ready, and if you aren't around, it will automatically shift to the warming mode. After serving, close the lid to preserve the freshness and warmth of the rice.
Clean up is quick and easy since the bowl is non-stick and removes from the unit. The gaskets aren't difficult to clean, but they can accummulate gunk from the steam.
If you want to replicate your favorite restaurant steamed rice in portions appropriate for a small household, this is a great way to do it.
